Hi James210, Thank you for that example of a sinner's prayer, Psalm 51. It is a good match (comparison/contrast) for Luke 18 where there is the prayer of the sinner and the prayer of the sinner who did not know that he was a sinner. Psalm 51:1, "Be gracious to me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; According to the greatness of (Thy) compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me." Compared with the Pharisee and the tax collector prayers: Luke 18:11, "The Pharisee stood and was praying to himself, 'God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax-gatherer. 12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.' 13 But the tax-gatherer, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' 14 (I) tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted." Guys, These are prayers or short cries for mercy to God, of which I am well aware. They are not presented as what a Christian is to do to enter the Christian convenant which is always baptism, see Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; Compare Acts 22:7-16, Paul speaking of how he was saved: ...and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?' "And I answered, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.' "And those who were with me saw the light, to be sure, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me. "And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Get up and go on into Damascus, and there you will be told of all that has been appointed for you to do.' "But since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus. "A certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law, and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, came to me, and standing near said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very time I looked up at him. "And he said, 'The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear an utterance from His mouth. 'For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard. 'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.' I am at a loss to understand how anyone would think these short prayers are biblical examples of the born-again prayers found in evangelical pamphlets or anything to do with becoming Christian. |
