1 | Bible Observation How to's | 2 Tim 2:15 | mel dillon | 105623
I am struggling with how to make observations of bible text. How to really get in and dig it up. Any hints as to how to read more into the words? I am in a class, and I read it and read it and read it, and I don't know what the observations would be.
2 | Bible Observation How to's | 2 Tim 2:15 | Makarios | 105624
Greetings Mel Dillon, I firmly believe that the Bible was written to be understood and obeyed and should therefore be read like any other book of information and instruction. If God is truly the Author of the Bible, as Christians have always believed, then it is certainly reasonable to assume that He could say what He means! The Bible was written as God's revelation (not as a mystery-book, in some secret code), to all men, of all times and places. It is therefore meant to be understood by all people. God used ordinary men (like you and me) from many backgrounds to write different books of the Bible. Just so, it is significant that people of all backgrounds, social class, and of every race and nationality have read and loved, believed, and understood the Bible moreso than any other book ever written. Perhaps the best rule to follow is to take the Bible literally unless the context clearly requires a symbolic meaning; if the latter is true, then the meaning is to be found in the Scriptures themselves- not from modern science, or from one's own imagination, or from specially gifted "interpreters," or from any other source. As the unique and infallible Word of God, it is inexhaustible- an endless mine of rich truth and perfect counsel which no one can ever completely explore. Although the basic message of any passage can be comprehended by anyone who will study and believe it, that same passage will continue to yield new treasures of blessing and guidance over and over again. First of all, a person must approach the Bible as the very Word of God. The Bible is to judge us, not we the Bible! It is not our prerogative to pass judgment on the Bible's validity and veracity. Secondly, we must obey what we do understand from the Bible if we are to expect to gain further understanding from it. Third, a person must begin to study the whole Bible, and continue daily, year after year, all of their life. The more a person studies (and believes and obeys) the more he will understand, and the more the Bible will continue to 'grow' in its blessing of understanding. Every part of the Bible throws light on every other part, so that all must be understood in some measure if any would be understood in full measure. Therefore, there is no end to study for complete understanding; yet every moment of sincere Bible study will bring some understanding, and is time profitably invested, with eternal dividends. If you are looking for specific "techniques" towards studying the Bible more in-depth, then I am literally 'armed to the teeth' with ways to show you how to get into the Bible in such a way that would help you. I will provide a few of those techniques in two more posts to you, to prove to you that Bible study is a fascinating and very prosperous way to spend your time, not only for Bible class, but for your own personal enjoyment and spiritual growth. - Makarios |
