Part 2. (continued from previous posting) OTHER QUESTIONABLE TEACHINGS Meyer also advocates peculiar and unbiblical manifestations at church gatherings, and attributes them to the power of God . . . For a refutation of this and other unbiblical phenomena (e.g., being “slain in the Spirit”), we recommend Hank Hanegraaff’s book, Counterfeit Revival (B393/20.00). Although there is no biblical precedent, she makes the assertion that angels tell her what to preach . . . She goes on to promote the superstitious belief that certain kinds of jewelry attract evil spirits . . . In lieu of the biblical admonition to test everything by the objective Word of God (1 Thess. 5:21; 2 Tim. 3:16), Meyer further asserts that God would never allow her to fall into error . . . Despite what Meyer’s feelings tell her, Scripture says otherwise. The apostle Peter is a constant reminder of our proclivity for committing error . . . Were it not possible for Meyer to fall into deception and error, Scripture’s repeated warnings (e.g., Matt. 24:4-5; Acts 20:28-31; Gal. 1:6-9; 2 Thess. 2:1-3; 2 Tim. 4:3-4; 2 Peter 2:1-3) would be meaningless . . . Meyer overemphasizes and distorts the parameters in which God permits Satan and his angels to work, by attributing practically every negative experience to demonic activity. There is even a demon of accidents. For example, she recounts experiencing a close call while pulling into and out of a fast food restaurant parking lot. She shouts, “‘I rebuke the spirit of accidents, in the name of Jesus!’”(18) Her false view of demonic activity propagates a paranoid and superstitious mindset, while obscuring the work of Christ, human accountability, and biblical views of spiritual warfare. Because of Joyce Meyer’s adherence to a major tenet of Word of Faith theology and her subjective and unbiblical teachings concerning spiritual warfare, CRI cannot recommend her ministry . . . --------------------------------- To read Footnotes, please go to http://www.equip.org/search/ (NOTE: A CRI researcher contacted Joyce Meyer Ministries/Life in the Word by phone on 20 January 2000, and confirmed that her ministry is still selling the audiotapes listed above.) ------------------------------- CRI Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688 To read the entire, uncut article quoted above, please go to: http://www.equip.org/search/ and in the search field enter the words Joyce Meyer. |

RevC: Really it's not a problem for me that you're not a big fan of CRI. I say this without malice or sarcasm. Nobody at my local church and nobody in my family likes Hank H. I'm used to it. I'll not allow a thing like this to jeopardize our fellowship, good friend. I have nothing personal against Joyce Meyer. I don't judge her salvation or even her sincerity. I know a lot of people, including people I know and love, enjoy her ministry. It's nothing personal. It's just I feel that when asked, it is my duty to warn others of anyone whom I know to be teaching bad doctrine. On the other hand, I can't see arguing over personalities. That sounds like the folks in the Corinthian church. NASB 1 Cor 1:11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you. 1 Cor 1:12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." 1 Cor 1:13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? To paraphrase and bring it down to our day: Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Hank (CRI)," and "I of Joyce Meyer," and "I of Benny Hinn," and "I of Christ." Has Christ been divided? Hank H. was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Joyce Meyer? I will be glad to look up what, if anything, CRI has to say about UPCI. However, I'm sorry, but I have forgotten what UPCI stands for. Just send me a quick posting and I will then look it up and get back to you. I think the fact that we can agree to disagree is a good indication that our fellowshing is on solid ground. Thanks again for the question. Let us always remember: NASB Eph 4:3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. --JVH0212 |
