savedsince1980: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. There are many places in our country that jobs are just not there to find. My question to you is what about those in the church that can not find work of any kind. Even with those who work at looking for work in every way possible and can not even get work at a fast food place, what should the church do then. I personally have taken jobs that were considered the bottom of the barrel jobs and know what it is to support a family of six. This was some years ago but I was willing to take anything. That being said there are places today jobs just are not there no matter how lowley they are. I have found that the disabled have it very hard in finding work. Often these people look healthy and in good shape, but some are suffering very serious health problems. That's where the disabled are often judged very wrong as being able to take just any job. Even while pastoring a small church I have worked at several jobs that kept me humble and in touch with the low paid hard working people in the church. So I fully understand the issues on how much we help those in financial need. My opinion is we should help those in need and let the Lord be praised in our love showed to those in need. By our love to one another the world sees how Christ loves us. What are your thoughts? justme |

Justme (justyou?), My opinion doesn't matter. The bible teaches, as you know, that the church (the believers) are to remember the poor and needy. See Rom. 15:26 and Gal. 2:10 for examples. But, that is to be tempered by what I wrote earlier. Wisdom is required. I know what you mean. I lived in a 1977 Datsun for six months myself once. I know what poor means. In my opinion, given the miserable state of our economy, it would be wise for those who can work to consider employment in other cities around the country, Des Moines or Omaha for example. There are a few cities where this recession has not yet hit very hard. Those who are disabled do have it hard and should first sign up at their Goodwill employment agency. (I don't know if every city has one of these. But, the Portland, Oregon Goodwills do.) Then go to the state or county aid office and see what all they can get until the can get a job. Even with a job they will likely end up living off of a combination of low pay and state welfare. That's a sad truth. |
