1 | Who is he who restrains?ebrain. | 2 Thess 2:7 | mark d seyler | 188013
'Daniel wrote of Michael, the restrainer, this way: "And at that time shall Michael stand up [literally, stand still or desist from helping Israel], the great prince which standeth [whose normal and continued ministry had been to help Israel]" (Dan. 12:1); and Paul wrote of the restrainer this way: "He who now letteth [restrains] will let [continue his normal restraining ministry], until he be taken out of the way [ceases his normal ministry of restraining]" (2 Th. 2:7). The parallel between the two is conspicuous. Posted simply to present the alternate view --- Michael is nowhere called the restrainer in Scripture. --- This interpretation subtly re-frames Michael's "job", if you will. While we are told specifically that he is the protector of Israel, this interpretation has him now as "the one who restrains the mystery of iniquity." But that is nowhere attested to in Scripture. That Michael is the one that is holding back the power of evil in the world is not found in the Bible. Micheal is the protector of Israel. 2 Thess. does not tell us that Michael stops protecting Israel. Daniel, and the other prophets, tell us that in the time of the end, there will come against Israel a great persecution, and that Michael, the one who stands for Israel, will stand. Does this mean that the protector of Israel is going leave his post? I read about how Israel will flee to the wilderness, to be cared for there. I wonder where Micheal will be, and what he will be doing? Love in Christ, Mark |

2 | Michael ; Isarael's protector? | 2 Thess 2:7 | InGodITrust | 188044
Mark, You missed my post to you as Searcher56 responded. I just got through going over a very interesting web page that you may want to look at. I had never thought of Michael the arc angel as being the restrainer. I think we (all) have misunderstood who or what the restrainer is or does. Since we are discussing the "the tribulation" and Michael has always been Israel's protector (of sorts) then it may make perfect Biblical sense that if he (Michael) withdraws his protection Israel will be vunerable. As we know Isreal "is front and center" during the tribulation and the fore front of Satanic attack. Something to think about. Check out this web site: http://endtimepilgrim.org/restrainer.htm It appears the web site is sponsored by Messianic Jews......or friends thereof. I found it very interesting in light of what you said the genders of "he" are in 2 Thess 2:7. As I said, we gentiles may have thought of the restrainer "in a general way," while the Jews and tribulation days are clearly in the spot light (144,000); God's climax with Israel prior to the 1000 millennial reign. What do ya think? InGodITrust |

3 | Michael ; Isarael's protector? | 2 Thess 2:7 | mark d seyler | 188067
Hi InGodITrust, So basically, you're saying that Michael the Archangel, rather than being the active protector of Israel, is the "keeper of the pit", and passively protects Israel by keeping at bay one of its foes? Love in Christ, Mark |

4 | Michael ; Isarael's protector? | 2 Thess 2:7 | InGodITrust | 188084
Mark, No, I am not saying that, nor does it appear that the church is the restrainer, nor (specifically the Holy Spirit) but those "in the know" seem to think Michael the archangel, based on Daniel, seems to be. I can not explain it as this whole area of study is new to me. That is why I gave you the web site: http://endtimepilgrim.org/restrainer.htm There (seems to be) some agreement among those who have studied this particular area that Michael has specific duties concerning Israel. I am completely out to lunch when it comes to discussing this subject, just thought it very compelling what that web site had to say. God Bless, InGodITrust |

5 | Michael ; Isarael's protector? | 2 Thess 2:7 | mark d seyler | 188098
I'm sorry, I thought you agreed with the website you were recommending. On the whole, I found their argument unconvincing. If I stay with the straightforward reading of Scripture it seems fairly simple to me. "those "in the know" " - is this an appeal to authority? There are a great many who have studied this passage in depth that do not agree with this. And the idea of Michael as the restrainer of 2 Thess 2 is not a majority view. Thank you for clarifying this for me. Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi InGodITrust, I've never been able find a conclusive statement in the Bible of who this restrainer is. I think we've discussed the prevailing theories. Thanks for the interesting discussion! Love in Christ, Mark |
