1 | Apostles mistaken? | Col 3:17 | Ric | 967
What you are talking about sounds like an "Oneness Pentecostalism" way of water baptism. In a answer below titled "Remember, that (water) Bapt..." might be of some help. I can come back later with a better explanation if needed. In God's Grace, Ric |

2 | (again) Apostles mistaken? | Col 3:17 | charis | 968
Dear Ric, Are the examples of water baptism recorded for us in the book of the Acts of the Apostles then invalid or mistaken? I know, deja vu. But I really am asking the same question again. So far, I have been likened to the 'Jesus Only' or 'Oneness' people, and accused of attempting to break up the Trinity, but no one has answered my question from the Bible. I seem to be getting into the emotions and traditions of man. The beginning of this line of questioning is the validity and efficacy of the name of Jesus. Please answer without giving me your opinion of the correct manner of baptism, or making suppositions of my motive or doctrine or accusing me of being attached to some denomination. In Christ Jesus.
3 | (again) Apostles mistaken? | Col 3:17 | Ric | 982
I assume you are talking about Acts 2:38, where it says: "Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (NIV) This is talking about "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" and not "water baptism". I am not trying to to say that you are in this or that denomination, I just said that it sounds like the teaching of "Oneness Pentecostalism" by the question your asking. It is a good question to ask, for we need to know or try our best to know what God is telling us. I might not be the best one to explain what God is trying to tell us from His Word, I am only a laymen in our Lord's Church. Apologetics is a hobby of mine that I've been self teaching myself for the past four years now, and I will try my best to explain God's Word as He want's us to know it and not my will. 4 | Acts 2:38 not water baptism? | Col 3:17 | charis | 988
Acts 2:38 not talking about water baptism? Whoa! Ric, you are brave:-) More than a few Christians might take issue with that statement. So Peter was saying that 'be baptized' and 'the gift of the Holy Spirit' were two separate things? Look at "For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus." Acts 8:16, and "And as they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?""Acts 8:36. In any case, you are still focusing on my question being a dogma of water baptism. I am asking about the power and efficacy of the name of Jesus. So, your answer is that we are to do all things in Jesus' name but water baptism? Are there other (optional, non-salvational) things we should do in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? Friend (truly!), I am only taking your opinions to the next logical step. I am not making fun of you any more than I try to look at myself with honesty. On a side note, my study of the UPC and the 'Oneness' people, shows their view to be that Jesus superceded the Trinity. I do NOT believe this. I, too, am not a 'professional' Christian. I pray that I will never become one. Jesus and the disciples encouraged all believers to be ministers (servants), but did not have a lot of good things to say about 'professional religious persons.' With love in Jesus' name. |

THESE JEWS WOULD ALLTIMATLY GIVE THEIR VERY LIFE TO DENOUNCE THE LAW AND JUDAISM.LOVE YOUR BROTHER IN CHRIST RCSCROLL
6 | Jewish Baptism in YHWH? | Col 3:17 | charis | 1069
Dear RCSCROLL, Jewish Baptism? I am aware of Israel being "baptized into Moses," and know about ritual cleansing for priests, Pharisees, and hand-washing by Jews, but all Jews required baptism in the name of YHWH? This is the first I have heard of this. Any references? I will look into this. Thanks for comments. By the way, please unlock CAPS, as it is hard to read in those narrow columns. In Jesus' name.
7 | Jewish Baptism in YHWH? | Col 3:17 | dr_emery | 1086
I am new to this forum. However, this question, which goes unanswered at this point, would do much to solidify my belief in the Heb rendering for the name of the Son of God, which indicates salvation resting in Jehovah. This has been proposed to me in a recent informal discussion. What might be an answer to this particularly pertinent query ?

This is beyond me, but would love to read some views...any takers???
9 | Any takers? | Col 3:17 | dr_emery | 1105
Dear Happy, As I have said, I am new to this forum. The open folder indicators seem to direct the principle question to one series of answers. Mine was meant to interject another possibility : Could baptism in the 'fuller' sense indicate that there was a progression of office in using a name ? that to baptize in the name of JC indicated a higher source that would consecrate an individual ? and that the holy spirit acted as a force rather than a personage in the application of that consecration -- esp'ly since the Grk rendering indicates an 'applied' gender, rather than gender to indicate a definite article representing a personage. Thus, in the name of JC would allow intersession between the head of the Christian congregation and the God and Father to whom thanks was being rendered ? Again, if I am using this forum incorrectly, forgive me. I would like to resolve my feelings. Thanks ! |
