1 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | EdB | 114854
Leonard I'm sorry after I posted my first response I noticed you did have a particular verse in mind. Col 2:2. In my first answer you will see Unger lists this mystery as point 6. “God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself” (Col. 2:2, 9; 1 Cor. 2:7). This involves Christ as the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia lists it as, "In a wide sense it is the whole gospel, God's world-embracing purpose of redemption through Christ (e.g. Romans 16:25; Ephes. 6:19; Col. 2:2; 1 Tim. 3:9)" For a tie breaker I went to John MacArthur which agrees with Unger. mystery. Leaving out the phrase between “God” and “Christ” (see marginal note), which was probably not in the original text, changes nothing. The point is that the mystery Paul referred to here is that the Messiah Christ is God incarnate Himself (cf. 1 Tim. 3:16). MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). The MacArthur Study Bible (electronic ed.) (Col 2:2). Nashville: Word Pub. I hope this helps EdB |

2 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | tortoise | 114868
Hi EdB, Jesus certainly is the fullness of the Godhead bodily, but doesn't Col 2:2 refer to more? Because is he not only God, but also Christ the Messiah and Savior, the one to whom all authority has been given? As it says in Col 1:26 "the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints". A mystery here, seems to be something that was hidden but now has been revealed. And what is that mystery? Is it not revealed in 1:27, "which is Christ in you the hope of glory". Doesn't this favor the The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia that you quote and suggests that MacArthur actually misses the point here? tortoise |

3 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | CDBJ | 114889
Hi tortoise, The word “mystery”, as found in Col. 1:26 has an interesting etymology. Col. 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: It comes to us from the Greek word MUSTERION, which was a word that was frequently used by those in a Greek fraternity. It meant the secrets of that special organization or group and the secrets were only known by those that were actual members of that particular organization or group known as brothers; the secrets were known but just by a select few, just like those in Christ or the saints. Only God can revel the secrets to his chosen few or the sanctified ones, saints. Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Have a great day, CDBJ |

4 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | tortoise | 114989
Hi, Yes, indeed, God through his Holy Spirit has enabled us to know and receive the truth, as 1 Cor 2:12 says, "now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God that we might know the things which have been freely given to us by God". And the knowledge of the mystery which we the church have and share which is in Christ and Christ in us his church, has come to us through the NT Scripture, which has in large part been written by Paul, which came to him by revelation, for Gal 1:11-12 says, "For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ." God bless brother. |

5 | In what way is Christ God's mystery? | Col 2:2 | CDBJ | 115008
Isn’t it just precious to know that we have a part in all of this? Ephes. 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: I have been a believer for over 38 years now and it still exciting to me that I know the Lord and His fantastic Word! It's funny to me how I can meet a believer, for the first time, and after five or ten minutes with them it seems like I have known them all my life. Have a great day, CDBJ |
