1 | sheila, why pray for a lesser gift? | Gal 3:28 | Morant61 | 122448 | ||
Greetings Searcher! The context of 1 Cor. 12 is exactly why I have a problem with calling tongues a 'lesser' gift. :-) Paul stresses that all 'parts' of the body are needed, and all the various ministries of the body are needed as well. I believe the same thing applies to spiritual gifts. If Paul meant to imply that tongues was least, or next to least, was he also saying that Apostles are more 'important' than teachers? Wouldn't that violate the whole message of chapter 12? As for your last point my friend, there are many things in life that can either be imitated or abused, but it does not necessarily follow from that fact that each of these things is wrong or bad. Paul never forbade anyone from speaking in tongues, he simply gave them instruction about the 'proper' way to exercise this gift in a worship service. In fact, he specifically commanded us not to forbid anyone from speaking in tongues. My primary concern with this issue is that we not demonize a genuine gift of the Spirit because some abuse it or over emphasis it. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Scripture ... 1 Cor 14:27-28 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. While verse 39 says we should not forbid speaking in tongues, these verses are part of the restrictions ... the proper way, as you say. I guess we will disagree about which gifts are greater. I do know all the gifts are needed ... no gift is given to all and I also think no one has all the gifts. |

Greetings Searcher! One way that my views on this topic has changed over the years is that I no longer see the gifts as a 'possession'. I tend to view them more as weapons in a rack. The Holy Spirit gives us whatever one we happen to need at that particular time. So, I do believe that one person 'could' manifest all the gifts if the need arose. Well, I have to get to bed my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
