1 | The Soul after Death | 2 Cor 5:6 | rocker | 11357
My question is about death. Where does one's soul go after death? I thought it went to heaven, then I think about the scripture that says when Jesus returns, the dead will rise first so if they are already in heaven why do they rise?

Hi Rocker Two verses first. 2 Cor. 5:6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 2 Cor. 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. In these two verses Paul tells us if we are in our bodies (alive here on earth) we are absent from Christ, but if we are absent from our bodies (dead) we are present with Christ. Jesus as you know is in Heaven at the right hand of God the Father. Therefore we can conclude that when we die we (our spirits go to be with Christ in heaven) The passage you refer to about dead rising first is 1 Thes. 4:16 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” This passage is generally referred to as a description of the rapture when Jesus calls froth the bodies of the Saints. You see our spirits will be in heaven upon death but our bodies remain behind. At the rapture our bodies will rise imperishable and perfect and we will re-inhabit them to live forever within them, again in Jesus’ presence. I hope this answers your questions if not just let us know how we can help. Be blessed and welcome to the forum Ed |

The 'rapture' is NOT scriptural, it is a doctrine of men. 1Thess 4:16 is addressed to 'Christians' who are concerned regarding those who had "fallen asleep in Jesus", v13-14. The living Christians will not precede the dead Christians, because they will be raised first, when the Lord descends from Heaven, v15-16. In verse 17 both the living and raised Christians will "meet the Lord in the air", not on earth. And will be with Him forever. There will only be ONE resurrection of the dead, John 5:28-29. ALL who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgement". ONE resurrection of ALL the dead, not two resurrections. |

Although the actual word rapture isn’t used in the English translation of the Bible the concept of that doctrine is clearly taught. The word trinity isn’t used in the Bible either but are we to assume that this is also a man's doctrine, I don’t think so! Doesn’t the Bible infer that there is a second resurrection although not mentioned as such and that it takes place after the millennial rule of Christ? Rev. 20:5-6 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. [6] Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
