Bible Question: My question is about death. Where does one's soul go after death? I thought it went to heaven, then I think about the scripture that says when Jesus returns, the dead will rise first so if they are already in heaven why do they rise? |
Bible Answer: Hi Rocker Two verses first. 2 Cor. 5:6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 2 Cor. 5:8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. In these two verses Paul tells us if we are in our bodies (alive here on earth) we are absent from Christ, but if we are absent from our bodies (dead) we are present with Christ. Jesus as you know is in Heaven at the right hand of God the Father. Therefore we can conclude that when we die we (our spirits go to be with Christ in heaven) The passage you refer to about dead rising first is 1 Thes. 4:16 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” This passage is generally referred to as a description of the rapture when Jesus calls froth the bodies of the Saints. You see our spirits will be in heaven upon death but our bodies remain behind. At the rapture our bodies will rise imperishable and perfect and we will re-inhabit them to live forever within them, again in Jesus’ presence. I hope this answers your questions if not just let us know how we can help. Be blessed and welcome to the forum Ed |
