All replies welcome, but I was not specific enough in my question as to what I prefer an answer to include, which is Scripture references. Original question: "What kind of things do and do not prove the genuineness of saving faith?" There was an oversight on my part when I submitted the original question. What I am looking for, but did not specify, is: Amended question: According to the Scriptures, what are the evidences of genuine saving faith? |

AMENDED QUESTION: *According to the Scriptures*, what kind of things do and do not prove the genuineness of saving faith? I have so far received many, many good, thoughtful replies to the original question. After posting it, I later amended the original question to phrase it more accurately and more specifically. I repost the amended question here in hopes that people will notice what I was really getting at. |

JVH0212 ... The context of the passage (12:11-13:10), Paul was displeased with some of the sin. He makes a list in 12:30. Brent pointed out the passages in 1 John how (habitual) sin is proof that we are not saved. I think that there is no struggle, we not not saved (Rom. 7:14). Paul also is not happy that they are demanding proof that Christ was speaking through him. 1 Cor 5:4 may relate. It may be that since Paul spoke against what they had done and were doing ... they were not ready to confess their sins, but, to question Paul's authority. They wanted to know if Christ was in him, not caring that He may not be in them ... log eye (Matt. 7:1-5). Jam. 2:14ff shows us that works is proof of faith, it is not part of salvation (Eph 2:8-9), but is proof (vs. 10). Heb 11:1-2 defines faith ... being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. The rest of the chapter is an example of some of our hero's faith. This is an excellent question, I will study it more. I hope I answer |

Hello JVH! According to our Lord, (Matthew 7:16-17, John 4:36) we will know those who do/do not have a genuine saving faith by observing a person's fruit, or the substance of their character based on their actions and words. What "fruits" determine who is genuine and who is not? We must look towards the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), which is preceded by the fruits of iniquity. Those who are 'genuine' will produce 'good' fruit in every work (Col. 1:10). I believe that there is a direct relationship between how we act or what we say and where we are with the Lord Jesus Christ (relationshipwise). |
