1 | Do holy people have to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 12:30 | algumwood | 29364
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied." Acts 19:6 There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." acts 19:2 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 1 corin. 14:5 (this also indicates that there are times for tongues without an interpreter, just not for public meetings) I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 1 corin. 14:18 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 1 corin. 14:39 now, where did you pick up the idea that it is rude to ask God for anything? what about "ask and it will be given to you...," "you have not because you ask not..," "which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, would give him a stone..." The persistent widow, etc... those are just a few of the multitude of scriptures that are clear that God WANTS us to ask of Him. true, there is nowhere in the Bible which states, "if you are filled with the Spirit you will speak in tongues." however, i think it is worth noting the recurring pattern we see of "AND" (see acts 2:4, 19:6 - there are more) tongues "usually" accompanied being filled by the spirit. also, not every believer automatically receives the Holy Spirit (acts 19:2) it is possible to be a believer and follower of Christ and not have received His Spirit. there is no clear evidence in the Bible to support that the giving and receiving of the gifts of the Spirit ceased. (and yes, like with all gifts, it must not only be "given" by God, but also "received" by the person). we must not allow our experience to shape our theology more than what is written in the Word. the Word does not adjust - we do. |

You say 'tongues "usually" accompanied being filled by the spirit' however I have proven otherwise. If you read 1 Cor 12, you should see that it is the Spirit who gives as He choses ... no where does it say we are to ask. Nonetheless, tongues is always a known language to at least one of the listeners on earth. |

3 | Do holy people have to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 12:30 | Hank | 29436
Searcher, in the biblical passages wherein "tongues" always pertains to a foreign language, it seems to me that much confusion would have been spared certain readers had the translators of the earlier English versions simply have said "foreign language." It's that mystical word "tongues" that excites the imagination and leads to frequent misinterpretation. Am I wrong? --Hank
4 | Do holy people have to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 12:30 | Searcher56 | 29459
I would even say arrogant ignorance for some. They think their speaking in a special tongue is spiritual ... while there is proof that the devil does the same. I know people have given given the special gift of speaking another known language without training. S |
