Also stated regarding the 'five-fold' ministry is: "Finally, some errors on this matter are worse than others. The loose use of the word "apostle" to refer to missionaries or church planters is not a serious error as long as this usage is sharply distinguished from the concept of an apostle who brings new doctrinal revelations and wields unquestionable authority. Nor is it a grievous error to interpret Ephesians 4:11 to refer to "apostles" in this sense of a church planter. The same would apply to those who hold that Ephesians 4:11 refers to the ongoing charismatic activity of prophesying. I do believe these interpretations are mistaken, but they are not in any way antagonistic to Christian faith. On the other hand, to interpret Ephesians 4:11 as a call for a restoration of the office of apostle of Christ is not only a mistake in exegesis, it opens the door to heresy. To claim that the church today needs visions and revelations through modern apostles and prophets of Christ is to deny the sufficiency of the Bible (2 Tim. 3:16) and to place the church at the mercy of false apostles, the likes of whom the apostle Paul warned us about in no uncertain terms (2 Cor. 11:13-15). The teachers of the "five-fold ministry," in seeking to "restore" a foundation which has never been moved, are actually laying a false foundation which will not support the building up of the body of Christ." http://www.equip.org, CRI, P.O. Greetings Nolan! I think the key point that Hank Hanegraaf is making is simply that the offices of apostle and prophet are not longer active. I have been following this thread, and part of the "heat" seems to come from the thought that Hanegraaf is saying that "prophecy" is no longer valid. However, this isn't what he is saying. There is still a gift of "prophecy." I even think there may still be a gift of "apostleship." However, these offices are no longer active. Apostles and prophets revealed God's will. Now that Scripture is complete and salvation accomplished, we no longer need anyone to reveal God to us. There will not be any "new" books in the Bible, no new revelation from God. Everything that can be said, has been said in Christ and Scripture. In terms of the gifts, I have no problem viewing a church planter or a missionary as using the gift of an "apostle" or a someone who applies God's Word as using the gift of "prophecy." However, neither can claim to function in the office and reveal "new things" from God. This seems to be the main appeal to the emphasis upon the "five-fold ministry." Someone can claim "new revelation" directly from God and not have to be accountable to anyone for it. So I agree with you that the offices are foundational and no longer valid. I also agree with Charis that we still need the gifts of the Spirit. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Greetings Tim! Yes, the point that he made regarding the gifts of the Spirit was not something that I particularly agree with as well, even though I do believe that those offices that he mentioned in the "five fold ministry" are no longer valid. Thank you Tim for your input! As always, we seem to be thinking alike here as well.. :) Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |
