Greetings Jeff! Thanks for the kind words! One often wonders when posting on a forum like this if a post is actually accomplishing anything. It is nice to hear that some are actually reading them. :-) I've been picking on those who believe that the gifts have ceased, now let me pick on many of those who believe that the gifts are still for today. :-) 1) Why do some churches allow many people to speak in tongues at once when Scripture specifically forbids this? 1 Cor. 14:27 says, "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret." 2) Why do some churches allow tongues to be spoken publicly, even when there is no interpretation, when Scripture specifically forbids this. 1 Cor. 14:28 says, "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God." There are several reasons why I am passionate about this topic (and not one of them includes me being pentecostal or charismatic): 1) I can't stand for anything to be presented as Biblical doctrine, when Scripture does not support it. 2) I believe that the Gifts of the Spirit are meant to enable us to minister more effectively. Most churches have forgotten about the Holy Spirit, and most have certainly ignored His gifts. It is not tongues that I am concerned about, it is all of His gifts. We need His power to minister to this lost and fallen world. p.s. - For your reading, I would suggest 1 Cor. 12-14, Eph. 4:1-17, Rom. 12:4-8, 1 Tim. 4:11-16, 2 Tim. 1:6 (Note by the way that Timothy had a spiritual gift!), Heb. 2:1-4, and 1 Pet. 4:10-11 I hope these aid in your study my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim! (Yes, I still lurk every great once in a while - I had to think a moment to remember how to post!) And once again, I find your posts sound, and refreshing! Of course no one will ever present a verse showing that spiritual gifts have ceased. We can only find verses that speak of believers having them. I wonder, though, that its not the gifts that have ceased, rather, that it may be the faith, commitment, and submission that have ceased. And how many of us have spiritual gifts, and think these things are our own abilities and talents? How many of us have spiritual gifts, and have never had the faith, or willingness to use them? Paul wrote to Timothy to awaken his gift. Are there any to whom this may apply today? God bless you my friend! Love in Christ, Mark |
