Hi, Brad... In theology -- orthodox Christian theology, anyway -- the definitions of the terms we use are as precise as we can make them. By Cessationism we mean that the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit (e.g., tongues, healing, prophetic revelation, etc.) were particular to the Apostolic Era (i.e., during the lives of the apostles). These sign gifts were uniquely used by the Holy Spirit in the establishment of the primitive church. Their passing preceded the closing of the canon of Scripture. By contrast, Continuationism holds that these miraculous gifts are still available to believers of our day, even to the extent of being normative. The latter view, of course, contravenes the doctrine of sola Scriptura. If for that reason alone, we'd do well to render proper deference to our gracious host, in eschewing its public avocation on the forum. In Him, Doc |

Again, sorry for responding so late. Doc- regarding the cessation of particular spiritual gifrts I'm afraid on this issue I have been mostly guilty of believing what I've been told/taught over the years from within a particular denomination. I have spent time on my own searching the Scriptures in an attempt to justify this but have been unconvinced by Scripture that this position is true. I'm not at all saying that it's not; I've simply believed it this way to this point because those with more time in the church and, apparently, in the Scriptures have said it is so. Will you please point to the Scriptures alone to assist me in understanding where they affirm that even a single gift of the Spirit has ceased or will cease prior to His coming again? Thanks and God bless, Jeff |

Hi, Jef... Not while I'm passing kidney stones. How about if you look to some of the other kinds of gifts that Christ has given the church (a la Ephesians 4:8-16): http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/sg1856.htm http://www.mountainretreatorg.net/articles/cessgifts.html http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/1856 You might also want to go to www.monergism.com, and enter "spiritual gifts" into the search box. All those fellows cite the specific passages for you. In Him, Doc |

Thanks Doc, and forgive my apparent forgetfullness (I didn't forget about the stones) I really didn't expect you would get to this for a day or so. Thanks for the references; I will follow up with them. Jeff |
