1 | What liquid was in the communion cup? | 1 Cor 11:25 | EdB | 233031
On the point of not putting new wine in old skins that you mentioned and comes from Mark 2:22 (NASB) 22 "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins." Many say the reason is the new wine being fermented will explode the skins. However fermented wine doesn’t produce gas. Gas is produced during the fermentation process, but it is also produced when grape juice spoils. So we know two things here, one the “New Wine” spoken here is not yet alcoholic but is what New Wine is today, grape juice that has virtually no alcoholic content. Two as such it is readily susceptible to spoilage that produces gas that would explode the skin. The reason you aren’t to put New into Old Skins is with the Old skins there is a great chance of contamination from residual old grape juice which is by now is surely contaminated and will cause the New Wine to spoil and produce gas that would destroy everything. Therefore they put the New in the New Skins that had just been recently salt treated which would minimize the chance microorganisms needed for either fermentation or spoiling the New Wine turning it to vinegar. |

2 | No word like juice at Jesus time? | 1 Cor 11:25 | 00123 | 233040
That's quite interesting: wine in "new wine" actually refers to grape juice. Is that because Israelites of Jesus time didn't have the word juice? Did they call everything made of grapes (fermented or not) wine? If so, wine was either alcohol or juice, right?

0123: I am somewhat wondering why use new wineskins? How would using old wineskins over again be a problem? I dont think just plain grape juice would expand in the wine skins, would they? Is this passage that some say it's ok to drink wine? Would just grape juice stored in wineskins ferment? Blessings. justme |

4 | No word like juice at Jesus time? | 1 Cor 11:25 | EdB | 233043
Justme Grape Juice can ferment or spoil both processes produce gas that would cause a skin to burst. New wine skins are freshly treated with salt. Salt kills the microorganisms that cause grape juice to fermentation and to spoil. So putting grape juice in a new skin insures all contamination that might destroy the juice is absent. It would be similar to putting the grape juice in a boiled sterile bottle today. However old skins the salt has been leeched out and if there is any residual juice inside it is sure to have been contaminated just through normal usage and exposure to air. It would be similar to putting grape juice in an old dirty bottle today. Therefore anything stored in it is susceptible to either fermentation or spoilage. Either of which would cause the wine skin to burst. |
