Bible Note: On the point of not putting new wine in old skins that you mentioned and comes from Mark 2:22 (NASB) 22 "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins." Many say the reason is the new wine being fermented will explode the skins. However fermented wine doesn’t produce gas. Gas is produced during the fermentation process, but it is also produced when grape juice spoils. So we know two things here, one the “New Wine” spoken here is not yet alcoholic but is what New Wine is today, grape juice that has virtually no alcoholic content. Two as such it is readily susceptible to spoilage that produces gas that would explode the skin. The reason you aren’t to put New into Old Skins is with the Old skins there is a great chance of contamination from residual old grape juice which is by now is surely contaminated and will cause the New Wine to spoil and produce gas that would destroy everything. Therefore they put the New in the New Skins that had just been recently salt treated which would minimize the chance microorganisms needed for either fermentation or spoiling the New Wine turning it to vinegar. |
