Bible Question: That's quite interesting: wine in "new wine" actually refers to grape juice. Is that because Israelites of Jesus time didn't have the word juice? Did they call everything made of grapes (fermented or not) wine? If so, wine was either alcohol or juice, right? |
Bible Answer: Actually the Greek word oinos which is usually translated wine can referrence fermented and unfrermented wine. The same word is used in Eph 5:18 where it says to not be drunk with wine. Which obviously means alcoholic wine. However the same word is also used in Rev 19:15 where it says Jesus treads the winepress with wine. The product of a wine press is not yet fermented so it is talking of grape juice. In Rev 6:6 oinos refers to the grapes as a crop still on the vine that are not to be touched.
