1 | why is toiauten translated 'other' here | 1 Cor 11:16 | Ian Goddard | 149376
Given that the Greek text reads "hemeis toiauten sunetheiav ouk ekomen", I was wondering why the NASB has translated this phrase as, "we have no OTHER practice, " instead of "we have no SUCH practice". As far as I can tell, in every case in the NT where "toiauten" and cognates is found, the NASB has translated it as, "such" or "like". I have only been studying Greek for a short while and would appreciate any light on this matter.

Greetings Ian! I did a little research on your question. Basically, the literal translation is: "We have no such practice!" However, most believe that the 'practice' being referenced is the 'praying without the head covered' in v. 13. Therefore, several translations have taken the liberty of making it clear what Paul is saying. I would argue for the more literal translation. I think that translating the word 'such' as 'other' is too much of a liberty. :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Brother Tim, Translation is so very difficult at times, isn't it? One of my profs is a recognized Biblical Languages expert. He has a book as required reading for his second year Greek students. It contains all of the mistakes and misunderstandings that people make in interpreting the Greek -- it even includes mistakes the author made! I've been meaning to ask you: Since you have the ability to read in the Greek, do you use the Greek exclusively? If so, are the problems like the one you mentioned in this thread, mitigated? Thanks, as always, brother Tim, for your very useful contributions to the forum! In Him, Doc |

Greetings Doc! I'm not good enough to use it exclusively! ;-) My computer software allows me to view the Greek and the English translations side by side. With that extra help, I can follow the Greek fairly easily. If I tried to use the Greek only, I could do it, but it would be very slow reading. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
