1 | Mercy's God's prerogative | Rom 9:15 | Lionstrong | 156731
Hi, CSM, It is not correct to say that God "requires" mercy of himself. God is merciful. That's just the way he is. (Ps 86:15 But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.) God does NOT require holiness of us because he requires holiness of himself. He requires holiness of us because he himself is holy. (1 Pet 1:16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.") You argue that there would be assurance of finding mercy from God if “Mercy is a requirement God not only makes for mankind but also makes for himself.†I do not believe this is true because God does not “require†mercy of himself. Merciful is just the way God is. The basis of finding mercy with God is that God is merciful. In contrast to the statement that God is NOT free to do anything he wants, I believe God is free to do anything he wants. The Bible says, (1 Ps 115:3) “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.†(2 Ps 135:6) “Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.†Please show us in Scripture that God can do only some of the things and not “whatever†pleases him. I think we may be in agreement, if you have simply made a mistake in your wording. If what you really mean is that God requires us to be the way he IS, then we have no disagreement. God requires us to BE perfect because He IS perfect. (Matt 5:48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.) God does not “require†himself to be anything; that's just the way He is already! |

2 | Mercy's God's prerogative | Rom 9:15 | C.S.M. | 156815
Hi Lionstrong, Of course God is perfect, because he is who he is, and in that context, he requires of himself, personally, perfection. And as II Cor 3:17-18 says,"we are changed into the same image from glory (his understanding) to glory (his understanding), as as by the Spirit of the Lord." We get that understanding from the study of his thoughts, words and deeds, ways, means and directions, by the written word, the Bible. We agree. Always in Chirst, C.S.M. |

Hi C.S.M., There is something you wrote that I don't understand. Would you please tell me what you mean when you write: "glory (his understanding)"? Thank you! Love in Christ, Mark |

4 | Mercy's God's prerogative | Rom 9:15 | C.S.M. | 156828
Hi Mark, Eph 1:17-23 tells us Paul said that God is the Father of glory, then asks him to give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him..that the eyes of our UNDERSTANDING be enlightened that we may KNOW.. (know what?) 1. the hope of his calling 2. the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints 3. the greatness of his power to usward who believe 4. the working of his mighty power 5. the same power he working in Christ when he raised him from the dead. 6 the fact that he seated Jesus as his own right hand, far above (not just a tiny bit above but far above) above what? 7. ALL (not just some but all) principalities, powers, might, dominion, EVERY NAME that is named, (where?) not only in this world but in the world to come. ( does every disease have a name? his name eradicates it then.) 8. And God has put all (people, places, things, and demons) under his feet (the feet are in the body, not in the head, right?) and gave him, (Jesus) the head over all (people, places, things and devils) to the church...his body (where the feet are), the (head and the) body is the fulness of him (God the Father) which fills all in all. I'd call that glory, understanding God, wouldn't you? Always in christ, C.S.M. |

Hi CSM, Call me obtuse - I don't get it :-) The knowledge of God's glory is the same as God's glory itself? Mark |

6 | Mercy's God's prerogative | Rom 9:15 | C.S.M. | 156861
Hi Mark, No, God's glory produces wisdom, and understanding in the knowledge (of whom?) of him. God's glory encompasses everything God is, thinks, says, does, produces etc..but we must be able to rightly divide it II Tim 2:15. What does it take to rightly divide it? Study of God's word on every subject brought to our remembrance by the Holy Spirit. No, I won't call you obtuse :-) Always in Christ, C.S.M. |
