The Greek word that is here mis-translated as "bond-servant" in both translations is "doulos" and means "slave". The NASB has Christ Jesus just as Paul wrote it--why did he do that? |

Hi djconklin, The dictionary says, "bond-servant n. 1 a person bound to service without pay 2 a slave" So I would not say that this is mis-translation since the word bond-servant has "slave" as a second meaning. I am reminded of John 15:15 where Jesus says, "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master (or Master) is doing; but Î have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you." Parenthesis is mine. If I remember correctly, a bond-servant was a former slave that continued his service out of the love for the master. He did service without pay, but really out of friendship to the master. As far as the word arrangement for Jesus Christ or Christ Jesus I found it both ways in my Interlinear Greek-English New Testaments. I have one put out by Baker books and one by Tyndale. I don't think that the order is important. What is important is to receive the gospel or good news that Jesus is the Messiah; that He is God among us. Later, Ray |

"The dictionary says, "bond-servant n. 1 a person bound to service without pay 2 a slave"" Thanks Ray. Which dictionary? I was using TDNT. |

Hi djconklin, The definition came from Webster's New Word College Dictionary, fourth edition. I wondered about your TDNT dictionary. I would understand that that is an acrostic for TynDale New Testament. That Interlinear version does indeed have the order (Christ Jesus) that the NASB has. If TDNT does indeed stand for Tyndale New Testament, I as a "capitalist" find that very confusing. :) I hope that you and Ed can keep your ongoing debate today on other matters and scriptures out of our converstion about Romans 1:1. |

Ray I apologize for any action on my part that may have negatively effected you conversation with DJconklin. Please forgive me. EdB |

I always appreciate how quickly Ed can apologize. That takes real courage which many others should learn. For my part I have to admit that I get very easliy frustrated with people who (to use a different analogy) who don't even know the numerical system and yet persist in asking how to solve a differential calculus equation and then quibble over what you show them just because they were taught differently when learning to use the abacus (sp?). |

I addressed my apology to Ray and it stands on it's own. But thanks for your input. EdB |
