Bible Note: Greetings Djconklin! The article on 'doulos' in TDNT was written by Rengstorf. I agree that it would be better to translate the word 'doulos' as slave! However, I don't think it makes any huge difference. The main point of 'bond-servant' is probably to avoid some of the ugly images associated with 'slave' in our modern culture. Even Rengstrof says that the primary emphasis of the word is "unconditional commitment." Further, the word seems to have several unique meanings when applied to beleivers. Especially for Paul, it becomes almost a title of office - similar to the designation of the Old Testament prophets as "servants of God."
