Jesus never intended for the Apostles to use the exact phrase. This is very simple. If Jesus intended for the Apostles to use the exact phrase. And they did not. Then they would have been disobedient in their acts and Words in the book of Acts. No where do you find that they baptized in the exact words or phrase "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost (or Spirit). But, You do find where they said and baptized in "Jesus Name". God named "Jesus" if you study what a Name really means you would understand what I mean. The utterance of a Name is not what I meant. You must know the individual. Notice, in Acts Paul called on the Name of Jesus to cast out evil spirits. But when the jews tried it, it did not work. Tim, justme says that I owe you an apoligy and that I broke the rules of this forum in the way that I spoke to you. How do you feel about that? | ||||||

Greetings Cajam! How do I feel? I believe that it is always possible for brothers in Christ to disagree without being disagreeable. I feel that you were wrong in your choice of words and in the spirit of your post. Why do I say that? Because, you don't know me. You don't know where I stand with Christ. To make a blanket judgement of me because I disagree with your interpretation of Scripture is inappropriate. But, I am not interested in an insincere apology. If you really feel led to do so, fine! If not, I'll survive. Either way, I do not hold grudges my friend! :-) As far as the rules of the forum are concerned, that is not my call! :-) I partially agree and disagee with your last post though. While I don't see Mt. 28:19 as being a 'necessary' formula, without which baptism is meaningless, I don't see how one could argue that Jesus didn't really intend for them to use the phrase at all. If He had meant that one must baptize only in Jesus name, He could have very simply said, 'Baptizing in the name of Jesus'. But, He didn't say that. Now, as you correctly note, we don't see any examples in Acts where the entire phrase is used in baptism. However, we also don't have the verbatim text from any baptisms at all. So, it could very well be that the Apostles did in fact use the extact phrase of Mt. 28:19, but in narrative passages simply refer to the name of Jesus. Do you follow what I mean? The passages in Acts are not verbatim quotes of baptismal services. The verses in question refer to baptism, but do not give us the actual 'quotes' from the baptisms. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
