1 | Tongues mean Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:38 | WalkingTalkingBible | 181693 | ||
Thanks, Doc. I agree, the Word only is our sole authority. I understand that I don't have to agree with them (although I have to still be Christ-like in my disagreement with them). I agree with what the Word says. If you were me, would you continue to support the service? What I mean is, there is an entire service set aside just so new converts can "tarry" for the Holy Spirit. If these new converts speak in tongues, these leaders say that he/she has been baptized with the Holy Ghost. If the new convert doesn't speak in tongues, then he/she is told that they have not received the "fullness." I disagree so much. Am I being rebellious for not supporting that service? Thank you so much for your help, WTB |

Dear WTB, You asked, "If you were me, would you continue to support the service?" Well, ma'am, I don't think I can answer that for you. I believe Scripture would have you first appeal to your husband for guidance (Ephesians 5:22-23). Second, I would test my conscience in regards to the kind of message that is being conveyed by participating in such a church (2 Corinthians 3:2; 2 Corinthians 4:2). Third, I'd bathe the whole in prayer (Luke 21:36). Fourth, if I still felt so led, I would seek a way to leave that caused the least attention (1 Corinthians 14:40). Finally, I'd be extremely diligent to find a congregation that you and your family could be properly ministered to by the Word (Hebrews 10:23-25). You asked, "Am I being rebellious for not supporting that service?" I believe our brother Humbled answered well. The more we look into the mirror of the Word, the more fault we find. I've no doubt that rebellion resides in your heart somewhere just as it does in mine! However, we want to accurately discern what is actually going on in our hearts. God helps us with that process (Jeremiah 17), and we must continuously seek His wisdom in this regard. Of course, I can't speak definitively, but it sounds more like you are simply uncomfortable with the error that you see around you. If that is the case, that is more of an evidence of the Holy Spirit than all the stuff happening in those "tarrying" services! :-) All that written, you should be very, very cautious about creating dissent in the congregation. The Lord doesn't call us to be that way. Note that the assertive, rebuking, confrontational commands are in the pastoral epistles. The pastor has a specific kind of responsibility and authority to stand in the face of error and deal decisively with it. In Him, Doc |

Thanks, DocTrinsograce, for your response. I think I am more in disagreement about the whole tarrying for the baptism of the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues as the "initial" evidence than anything else. I've been studying and praying for understanding of this particular topic, and I believe I have the understanding now - and all of the responses I've received have helped a great deal. I chose to stop going to the service, altogether. My church is a Bible teaching church, but there is also a lot of old traditions that do not line up with the Word. The rebellion is there (in my heart) but I don't act upon. I choose to frequent the prayer services rather than "Holy Ghost Night." I think my whole choice of not going to the services is also based on the fact that the church also fails to minister to young adults like me. It seems so easy to stop going than to "put up with" a bunch of older people teaching their life long traditions. I know I sound very immature and upset, but sorry, I actually am spiritually immature (concerning this matter) and upset! Thanks for your time, and again, for your response. It helped me look at what's in my heart and examine myself. WTB |
