1 | Tongues mean Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:38 | DocTrinsograce | 181607
Dear WTB, The struggle today is that so many churches like your own do not really believe in the authority of Scripture alone (sola Scriptura), whether they realize it or not. Sometimes they are simply not taught, other times they've been the victims of false teaching. The Word of God is our sole authority -- fully sufficient, infallible, and necessary (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; Ephesians 2:20; Romans 1:19-21; Romans 2:14-15; Psalms 19:1-3; Hebrews 1:1; Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19-20). The fact of the matter is that one can't derive a doctrine of a "second blessing" from the full teaching of the Word of God. I rather doubt, therefore, that those with whom you are dealing will ultimately appeal to the Scriptures. In the final analysis, they will probably appeal to experience, as I've no doubt you've already noticed. Of course, all that written, we need to deal with "the gifts" in a way that accepts the complete teaching of the Bible. Every believer should earnestly desire and persistently pray for the special gifting of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:31; 14:1). At the same time, we all need to be extremely cautious, for we know that not every kind of gifting is valid (Deuteronomy 18:20-22; Acts 19:13-16; 1 John 4:1). Not every use of spiritual gifting is appropriate (1 Corinthians 13:1-3; 14:6-19, 27-31). Nevertheless, we have to be careful that we don't overreact by "throwing the baby out with the bath water." There are many legitimate ways in which the Spirit works in the lives and gifts believers (Ephesians 4:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). The gift of the Holy Spirit is an initial taste of what our future in Christ will be like (Ephesians 1:13-14). True believers have a deep longing to daily experience the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives (Galatians 5:22-25). And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:24-26 ESV) God bless you as you seek sound doctrine, and as you seek to teach it. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Chris... Welcome to the forum! This question seems to get asked on the forum a lot. Interestingly enough it is most often asked by those who have already arrived at a conclusion. This is called a "leading question." The problem with leading questions is that they aren't intended to derive truth, but to promote an agenda. That's why the Lockman's SBF Terms of Use -- the ones you agreed to today when you created your account -- explicitly discourage such a practice. Given your question about tongues, I can readily commend the following four part Bible study by John MacArthur: http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/sg1871.htm http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/sg1872.htm http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/sg1873.htm http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/sg1874.htm In Him, Doc |

Dear Doc, Thank you for your reply and for your welcome to the website! I have downloaded John McA's talks as you suggested and have confirmed with GTY that he doesn't believe that the gift of tongues is for today. I have benefitted greatly from Dr John's teaching, and in the last 2 years especially I have studied a number of his talks in some detail. I hold his ministry in high regard, but I reserve the right to hold a different opinion to him if I don't believe that his line of reasoning is correct.I will study these in detail and will reply properly in due course. I am fully committed to the inerrancy of scripture as I state in my resume, and so in each case it is imperative that I test what I believe to have been a genuine experience of the Holy Spirit against the scriptures to the best of my ability. I have come to some conclusions in my journey thus far-who hasn't!- but as a serious student of the word I have often lacked the forum in which to debate it. It's one thing to have sincerely held convictions, but it's quite another to debate them with a party spirit. This is something I hate and loathe. If I am guilty of displaying a party, divisive spirit then I deserve the censure of my brothers and sisters. If however I come with a teachable heart then I appeal to you folk in the forum not to judge me for being different, but rather to engage me in honest debate. I believe that a great deal can be gained in this way, especially through those who hold very different views. God bless you, Kalos, and the others in the forum. Best wishes, Chris

Thank you, Chris. I hope that you find our study of the Bible edifying. I rarely hear a sound hermeneutic when it comes to pneumatology these days. Of course, that's usually because people start with a preconceived idea of what the Scripture should say and work from there. One of the earmarks of that is the overemphasis of one aspect of the work of the Holy Spirit, and the neglect of others. The greatest work of the Holy Spirit in lives of believers is regeneration (John 3:5-8), the second is progressive sanctification (Ephesians 5:18-21), the third is preservation (Romans 8), etc. etc. Consequently, even without taking a stand on the orthodox doctrine of cessationism, how can personal spiritual gifts bear any significance at all in the light of these awesome and hardly conceivable works? (That was a rhetorical question. One, I think, for which we could all render answers.) Please understand, I'm not denigrating personal spiritual gifts. However, if THAT is all a person shows or knows or emphasizes, they've assuredly missed the boat. By the way, we have a long-time forum member -- highly regarded by all -- who shares your non-cessationist views. Whereas many come to the forum wanting to push a "second blessing" hobbyhorse, this gentleman is not like that at all. He lives a godly, humble, and studious life. He is articulate across the spectrum of Scriptural topics, always eager to learn from others. I am encouraged in my own walk as I see the fruit of the Spirit exemplified in his. The Holy Spirit is more manifest in the life of this single individual, than all the "tarrying" services put together! This is the great work of the Holy Spirit: Taking a fractured, flawed, fallen human being -- chosen by the Father and redeemed by the Son -- and conforming him to the image of the Christ! One final thing: No one is or has judged you in the negative sense that you suggest. We are a text based association with the single objective of studying the text of the Bible. Our primary presupposition is the sole authority of Scripture. We are yet-to-be-glorified human beings, therefore our particular perspectives not only differ, but are subject to change as we are persuaded by the Word, through the grace of God. We welcome your participation as you constructively join us in our interactive study of the Word. In Him, Doc |
