According the Bible (scripture cited), "the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch". That means that disciples are christians, there is no difference. The word "Christian" is just another name for "disciple", but is used far more commonly in today's society, because of the stigma associated with the word disciple. Nowadays people consider "disciples" as "too radical". But you will find that the Bible talks more about disciples than christians, because that is the true name for a follower of Jesus! In the bible, the first "disciples" were close followers of Jesus. Then his following grew after the his death and resurrection (see Acts 6:1). Most bibles have a concordance - look to find the word "disciple" and it will lead you to what it means to be a disciple, a follower of Christ. Disciples were called Christians, so they are one in the same. The word "Christian" is only the in the bible 3 times! | ||||||

Hello tduplechain, I guess the apostle Peter was wrong then when he wrote this: 1 Pet 4:16 (NASB) but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. 1 Pet 4:16 (ESV) Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. Greetings Steve! I had forgotten about that verse! :) Scripture uses many different terms to describe believers. The important thing isn't what we are called, but Who we know! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
