1 | filled and upon mean the same thing | John 7:39 | Ray | 113129 | ||
Hi Itiswritten, Thank you for your post and I agree with you entirely. Of course I, however, would choose a version that capitalizes so that 1 John 4:4 would be even more clear. 1 John 4:4b, "...because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." You may be thinking that I do not see that God indwells us, but really I do. "Christ in me, the hope of glory" and having the Spirit of God in me are what determine my belonging to Him. God also comes UPON persons for special circumstance for service, also. But these are things that God does. The Holy Spirit falls on us, comes upon us, and the Spirit or the Spirit of God descended upon Jesus for His ministry. However, being FILLED with the Holy Spirit (holy spirit to my mind), is something that we are supposed to do. Also, the Scripture says that He gives the Spirit (spirit to my mind) without measure. My body could not contain all of God; no way. But I can fill my mind with spiritual things and have much more available to me for later study. We can be filled with a spirit of wisdom or a spirit of love. But to be filled with the Spirit; no way. That is my understanding and why I listed the references for being filled with the holy spirit. Dear Ray, I appreciate the things that you are saying but I respectfully disagree. The only Scripture I can find that speaks of the Spirit of God given without measure is concerning Christ Himself. It is not the "spirit" of God in that sense. The Scripture which speaks of anyone receiving the Spirit without measure:That is located in John 3:34 and the verses surrounding it. I don't believe we receive the Holy Spirit without measure. I believe the Lord meets us where we are and fills us and that as we mature in our walk with Him our capacity enlarges and we can be filled more and more. I also do not believe any of us reach perfection this side of heaven. If there is another Scripture which speaks of the "spirit" without measure can you point it out to me? And then I can consider it. Sincerely, Itiswritten |

Hi Itiswritten, We are both looking at John 3:34; that is the verse I had in mind when I wrote to you. It reads "for He gives the Spirit [spirit, to my mind] without measure." In your first paragraph here, however, you speak of "the Spirit of God given without measure". That reads with an extra pronoun. Are you only thinking of John 3:34? John 3:34 talks about "He". "He" was sent from God speaking the words of God. "He" gives...without measure. Verse 35 talks about "Him" [the Son] and how all things have been given into His hand. So I see the "all things given into His hand" as being the things that He gives without measure; that is, He speaks the words of God. Verse 36 talks of how we believe in the Son for eternal life and if we do not obey the Son we are not hearing the words of God that we might see life. All things are given to Him; He gives the spirit without measure; He speaks the words of God. Obey the Son or the wrath of God abides on a person. John 3:35, "...and has given all things into *His hand." John 6:63, "...the flesh profits nothing; the words that *I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." That's the way I see it.
