1 | Do tongues relate to worship in context? | John 4:23 | Restored | 122439
It looks like we cross some denomination differences here, so it is best to agree to disagree and remember our purpose is to edify not prove who is wrong or right. Yes it does have to do with our worship especialy in our private time with God. Paul speak of speaking in tongues of men and angels 1Cor.13:1 and goes on to say but without love and I think this is the greatess love for one another, not that anyone is more knowlegeable than the other or more spiritaul.1 Cor.14:39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. |

2 | Do tongues relate to worship in context? | John 4:23 | Hank | 122525
Exactly where in the entire book of Jude does he address the subject of ecstatic speaking in tongues? It simply isn't there, and the only possible way to get "speaking in tongues" out of anything Jude said is by reading a meaning into it that is neither stated nor implied. Whether one chooses to call it twisting Scripture, misinterpretation of Scripture, or something else, the fact is that it is not sound exegesis of Scripture. My objective is not to prove you wrong and myself right. That should NEVER be the objective of a sincere student of the Bible. The objective should always be to ascertain the truth, to dig deeply and diligently for meaning. But we thwart our efforts and defeat the chances of real success in this endeavor when we approach a passage with a preconceived idea of what it means based on our individual doctrinal orientation. If one is determined to make Jude 20 a proof text for speaking ecstatic tongue speaking, and equally determined to ignore context, it is quite possible, I suppose, to convince oneself that that is what it means. By the way, I'm at a total loss to understand what 1 Corinthians 13:1, the verse you cited in your rebuttal, has to do with trying to prove that Jude 20 teaches ecstatic tongue speaking. For that matter, neither does 1 Corinthians 13:1 teach anything about the ecstatic "tongue speaking" you have been talking about. --Hank

May I suggest to you that the only worthwhile objective of a "sincere student of the Bible" is to get to know the Author better, day by day. Our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ is not about ritual or scholarship; it is about relationship. Oftentimes, we cover-up our lack of relationship with the Lord by exalting our selves through religiosity and other intellectual pursuits cloaked under the deceptive garb of pseudo-spirituality. I pray, Hank, that you are not one of those who have never had an intimate encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. You sound really smart (I'm impressed), but the Lord has said through His servant Paul, "Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." - 1 Cor 3:18-19 respectfully (a fool for Christ), prazn |

prazn: 1 Corinthians 3:18,19 is NOT a call for Christians to check their brains in at the door when they attend worship or engage in Bible study! The Bible does not promise that knowledge of the word of God comes without the diligent exertion of all the brains and energy that God endowed human beings with. Yes, the indwelling Holy Spirit guides His children mightily into all truth, but at the same time, His children are not relieved of their human responsibility to be diligent to present themselves approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. (See 2 Timothy 2:15). ..... Be careful what you hint at on this Forum, friend. I'm speaking directly about your statement, "I pray, Hank, that you are not one of those who have not had an intimate encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ." ..... Read ALL my more than 4,500 posts and cite just ONE that leads you to question my relationship with the Lord Jesus. --Hank
