2 | Why did David choose five stones? | John 3:16 | EdB | 17485
Because Goliath had 4 brothers see 2 Samuel 21:15-22. David was prepared to kill Goliath and his four brothers if need be. Just as Norrie stated earlier |

There is ample evidence in 1 Chron 20 also whereby the additonal 4 stones could have been reserved for Goliath's 4 sons. But how would have David known Goliath had 4 sons or 4 brothers for that matter. See 1 Samuel 17:26. "For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" What we do know and is spoken often prior to chapter 17 of 1 Sam is the 5 lords of the Philistines. It is mentioned several times. That David would have known. Either way I think it can be concluded that the stones were held for preparation for retaliation. The Philistines are described as "Proud" Zech 9:6. If one segment of the Philistines "champion" was not successful, wouldn't it be pride to send in the next segment's "champion"? The point or moral to the story is two fold. Trust in the Lord and believe in your heart that He is a Holy God. But, secondly I think it teaches us the wisdom of being prepared for known issues (the ones before us), and let God handle the unknown.

We don't know but I imagine the fact that there were 5 giants who were brothers in the Philistine camp would have been something everyone knew and had talked about more than once. Remember the Children of Israel knew about giants in the land since the days of the Exodus when the spies reported back that there were giants in the land. I'm sure the kept track of their commings and goings. I think picking up 5 stones demonstrates David's trust and faith in God, he was ready to defeat all 5 giants should the need arise. edB |

And my reply would be.... I would say you are reading into the scriptures your own suppositions. Where the scriptures are silent let them be silent. What God gives us is sufficient; 2 Timothy 3:16,17. God also warns us not to add to His Word; Rev 21:18.

You could say that if you were wanted to be insulting. I wasn't creating theology here I was simply stating what we knew from scripture and what I I thought the Children of Israel would have done with that information. You did the same thing in what you said in your first post. EdB |

Hmm. I am concerned for you. Your beef is with God, and not me. I am but a humble servant of the most High. His Word is Sufficient, and if it cuts you then I would "exam yourself" as Paul teaches us. I would send you to Hebrews 3:16-18 where Paul teaches of the sharpness of Scripture. We agree in this forum resonse that are arguments are biblically sound and supported. That is all I did, was iterate Scripture.

Sorry I posted to you early post. Which I was reviewing making sure I had all the facts straight. How is my beef with God? Now think about what you saying and what has occurred. You took the evidence as you viewed it and formulated your opinion or speculation of why David picked up 5 stones. I took the evidence as I saw it and came up with an opinion or speculation as I saw it. We both speculated on the issue since the Bible does not clearly state why he picked up 5 stones. However you then rather nastily told me my speculation was reading into scripture my own suppositions. Since we both did the same thing is that not calling the kettle black? And now you tell me my beef is with God? Are you trying to pick a fight here? Personally I don’t have the time or inclination to deal with you. EdB |
