CONCERNING LOOSING ONE'S SALVATION - PART II Mt 7:13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." Comments: If it was okay to live in sin as a "christian", supposing that you'd go to heaven, then this statement by Jesus would be a lie. Allowing sin in your life obviously is'nt walking on the narrow road. Mt 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 And then I will declare to them, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' Comment: I'd prefer to avoid being in their shoes too, since on His day Jesus will not be merciful any longer. You might get away with your hidden sins today, but then his light will shine on both us (the church) and those who are outside. May we repent from all sins today, amen! (I interpret "he who does the will of My Father" as being those who repent from sin, and don't continue in "lawlessness" (evident deeds of the flesh as in Gal 5:19). If you'd interpret it any other way, you might be caught in the herresy of "salvation by works" (see ”Salvation by Grace” part III). Mt 10:28 "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Comments: Here, Jesus is teaching his disciples before sending them out to minister. Why should we fear him if we can't be cast into hell? Mt 13:40-42 "Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth." Comments: Another translation of "all things that offend" is "all those who causes others to fall" (Folkbibeln). Compare with Mt 7:21-23 and comments above. Mt 15:18-20 "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man." Comments: Jesus plainly sais that evil thoughts, murders etc really defile a person. Mt 18:7-9 "Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! 8 "If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire. " Comments: Is your attitude towards sin the same as Jesus'? My time is not enough to show you all Jesus' statements concerning the consequenses of sin in a disciples life. I will briefly show you a few more, both from Jesus himself and from those who continued his teaching in the New Testament. Lk 24:46-47 "Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Comments: There is no gospel without repentence, and if repentence comes before remission of sins, what happens if you abandon your repentence? Dear S. W., You cite, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:21-23) Your comment is contrary to orthodox teaching regarding this passage. Salvation is not a matter of works. Nor is this passage speaking of Christians losing their salvation. It is, on the other hand, clearly stating that there will be some who believed they were saved, but, in the end, will discover that they were not regenerate. The unregenerate do, indeed, always continue in iniquity. In Him, Doc |

Doc The term unregenerate is interesting, I never heard of it before. I know that Faith is a free gift. A person I know had great faith at one time but is now very small. That person has lead people to the Lord. I pray for that person a lot but are there any verses that might help my prayers or that person. |

Dear Seedling, I, too, have known people to walk away from God. People that I thought were believers. The wheat and the tares look a lot alike! Please see my discussion of the ordo salutis in most 151193. In particular, you might want to see post 151466, which discusses regeneration. This word regeneration actually does occur in Scripture. Its just a fancy way of saying "born again." Consequently, the regenerate are those who are saved, and the unregenerate are those who are not saved. We should, indeed, be in prayer for people like you have mentioned. Who knows but that God will restore them to a life of great glory to Himself! I know from personal experience -- having geviously fallen away, probably I was not even saved at the time -- that a person in that condition is far more miserable than any other creature on earth. Thanks for yor answer. I read your post 151193 and will read it many more times for greater understanding. This person still has faith but it is ' hanging by a thread'. Another person I saw threw his Bible down and walked away. That person is in my prayers also. I rely on the verse Romans 8: 38-39 alot when I think of these people and ask God to let me and my family be faithful always. Seedling |

Dear Seedling, When I was working in the prison ministry, something interesting took place. One of the inmates was released on parole earlier than expected. As he was cleaning out his things, he took his Bible, loudly proclaiming to the other inmates "I don't need this anymore!" and threw it in the trash can. Twenty-four hours he was killed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, I'm not saying that this man's death was a direct result of his spurning the Word; however, the rest of inmates thought so, and we had little difficulty with disrespect for years following. It is difficult to get people to realize that at any given moment they are a heartbeat away from standing before God. It is only by the grace of God that we continue to live a moment longer. How awful it is for those who are not prepared to stand before Him. No one expresses the precarious circumstances of such people more eloquently than Jonathan Edwards in his famous sermon. http://www.jonathanedwards.com/sermons/Warnings/sinners.htm In Him, Doc |

Hi Doc, Basically the same thing happened at our church. A man and his wife walked in and sat down. In the middle of the Pastor's sermon the man got up and walked out of the auditorium. Gently, the Pastor excused himself, right in the middle of the sermon, and went outside to talk to the man. The man was in his car behind the wheel waiting for his wife. The Pastor asked him what was wrong, and the man said, "I don't believe this stuff and never will". He fell against the steering wheel dead that very moment. (Psalms 66:5 KJV) Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men. terrib |
