Bible Note: Dear S.W... You write, regarding Luke 15:11-32, "I assume that we all can agree that this parable primarily is about the Father's heart and salvation. ... Now, it is obvious that the sons state of being away from home is a picture of mankind's condition under sin, right?" Your fundamental premise is in error, although the father in the parable does, indeed, represent the Father in heaven, this parable is not about evangelism, nor is it necessarily about soteriology in general. As in any proper exegesis of Scripture (or any other writing for that matter) understanding the context is extremely important. Christ was giving this parable (as well as the one in verses 3 through 10) in response to the criticism of our Lord by the scribes and Pharisees in verse 2: "And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, 'This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.'" The elder son in the parable represents the Pharisees and scribes, the younger son in the parable represents the publicans and sinners (see verse 1). It is not possible to use this parable as a support for your theme. In Him, Doc |
