Greetings Norrie! Good answer! There are two main opinions about this issue and both make pretty good arguments. 1) The first is the view that man is made up of soul, spirit, and body. That these three are all seperate and distinct components of humanity. 2) The second is that man is made up of two components; body and soul/spirit, where soul and spirit are basically synonymous. For myself, I personally hold to a slightly modified version of option two. Based upon the creation account and the fact that man's eternal destiny will be a reunification of spirit and body, I believe that BODY plus SPIRIT equals a LIVING SOUL. Just something to think about! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

"I believe that BODY plus SPIRIT equals a LIVING SOUL." and when your body dies, you are a DEAD SOUL? :) Just kidding! I agree that there are instances where the soul and sprit seem interchangeable and instances where they are separate entities. I've heard it explained that you are a spirit, you have a soul (mind, will and emotions) and you live in a body. When our body dies, our spirit and soul go on to whereever you chose your final destination, hopefully everybody here will meet in Heaven. :) I guess when the Holy spirit speaks to you, you feel it in your spirit, it's not something you think or feel, it's something you sense deep inside of you, that's your spirit, He bypasses your soul and goes directly to your spirit. Your spirit is what you communicate with God thru. We are spirit and God is spirit so we communicate spirit to spirit. Anyway, that's how I was taught and understand it. :) |

Greetings Norrie! You said, "I've heard it explained that you are a spirit, you have a soul (mind, will and emotions) and you live in a body." This is almost what I am saying, except I would reverse the roles of soul and spirit. I would say you are a soul, you have a spirit, and you live in a body. One thing that is important to remember though is that the body is not a throw away part. Scripture makes it clear that at the resurrection, we will all have our bodies and spirits reunited. In fact, those Christians who go in the Rapture will have their spirits and bodies reunited even before the resurrection. The importance of this is simply that our eternal destiny (Heaven or Hell) will not be experienced as some sort of ghost like existence, rather we will have perfect bodies. Thanks for the response! I think that when we get our glorified bodies, they will basically look like the old at it's best stage but w/no imperfections. We won't have the same old one. After all, look how many bodies have already disintegrated, either w/age or were burned up or washed away, whatever. Then if you were crippled, you'll have a new body that's whole or if you're obese, you'll be the right size or have skin rashed, you won't have any, etc. God will make new bodies for us. Believe me, I'm ready for a new body! :)

Yeah, Tim, I'd hate to think I'd be fighting the battle of the bulge for eternity too. :) I'd like to have everything working too, not be wrinkled, gray hair....I bet you think I look like a fat, old crone. :)
