1 | Whose baptism? | John 13:6 | Reformer Joe | 37573
One helpful comment: use paragraphs. You write: "Many people don't understand the differnce between the Old and the New Testament. Salvation was given in the New Teatament only." So Abraham was not saved? Nor Moses? Nor King David? I think you are mistakenly assuming that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is equivalent to being saved. While all followers of Christ after Pentecost have the Holy Spirit indwelling them, that is not to say that it is the Holy Spirit's indwelling that saves them. Rather, it is the completed work of Christ on the cross which saves all those who have faith in that redemption. In the Old Testament, it was faith in God's coming redemptive plan that saved. We see that explained in Romans 4: 'What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."' --Romans 4:1-3 So as you quoted Hebrews, the sacrifices never took away sins; Christ did that on the Cross for those who preceded His incarnation as well as for those who followed it. --Joe! |

2 | Whose baptism? | John 13:6 | ATJ | 37593
If the people in the Old Testament had the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then why did Jesus tell his disciple to wait on the Holy Ghost. Seems like to me they would not have had to wait on the Holy Ghost. It is the Holy Spirit that keeps us save. We are saved from the condemnation of sin. As long as we don't fall into sin, then we remain saved. The Holy Spirit does not allow us to fall back into sin but He teaches us live Godly. Now, because of Abrahams faith toward God, It was counted to him as rightousness. Counted as rightous is not the same as being rightous. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is what allow a person to live Holy. Jesus said that when the Comforter comes, then He shall lead us into all truth. Many people beleived in God before Jesus was crucified but they still had to wait after the resurection. Can a person live in eror and still have the indwelling of Comforter? Is it not the Holy Spirit that seal us? |

3 | Whose baptism? | John 13:6 | Reformer Joe | 37644
Read what I wrote...most of the Old Testament people of God were NOT indwelt with the Holy Spirit. That is precisely what I said. However, it is Christ's sacrifice on the cross that saves us, not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Abraham was saved through his belief in God's promises. You wrote: "Now, because of Abrahams faith toward God, It was counted to him as rightousness. Counted as rightous is not the same as being rightous." I am one hundred percent behind this statement, and will further state that no one's own righteousness can save him. 'as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE."' --Romans 3:10-12 We all need Christ's righteousness: "More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith" --Philippians 3:8-9 --Joe! |
