1 | Thomas being sarcastic or serious? | John 11:16 | kalos | 8351
Nolan: Nothing wrong with your original question. You may want to look up the footnote at John 11:16 in the MacArthur Study Bible. I have the greatest respect for you and Reformer Joe. So at this point I am only doing a little cringing. My concern is that we don't make a habit of second guessing the motives, qualifications, etc. of the Apostles. Not saying you all are doing this, but haven't we had enough of Apostle bashing for one week? I would just hate to see that get started again on the Forum. Again, no disrespect or criticism of either you or Reformer Joe. I am only voicing a concern as to where this could lead. Your brother in Christ, JVH0212 |

2 | Thomas being sarcastic or serious? | John 11:16 | Makarios | 8355
Hello JVH0212! Yes, I agree, there has been alittle too much 'Apostle bashing' for one week.. :) I took your advice and looked up John 11:16 in the MacArthur Study Bible which states, "Thomas' words reflect loyal devotion and, at the same time, pessimism over the fact that they would probably all die. His fears were not unrealistic in the face of bitter hostility toward Jesus, and had not the Lord protected them in the garden (18:1-11), they may also have been arrested and executed. Cf. 20:24-29." MacArthur has a good point here, although at first glance, I have to confess that I saw more pessimism then loyalty. But I respect the fact that he did speak up with what appears as the highest loyalty, that being a martyr for the cause of Jesus Christ! Thank you for speaking up, JVH0212, about where this could lead, and if there is anyone from whom I would seek correction, it is you my friend. Even in topics such as this where we may view things a little differently, we will always be friends no doubt! I will stress the loyalty of Thomas if this leads in a direction that does not prove to be beneficial to the spiritual well-being of the Forum. Sometimes we get to writing so much here that we forget that we are being watched by the world at large.. And it helps to have a fellow brother in Christ to keep us accountable. Thank you JVH0212!
