Subject: Thomas being sarcastic or serious? |
Bible Note: Hello JVH0212! Yes, I agree, there has been alittle too much 'Apostle bashing' for one week.. :) I took your advice and looked up John 11:16 in the MacArthur Study Bible which states, "Thomas' words reflect loyal devotion and, at the same time, pessimism over the fact that they would probably all die. His fears were not unrealistic in the face of bitter hostility toward Jesus, and had not the Lord protected them in the garden (18:1-11), they may also have been arrested and executed. Cf. 20:24-29." MacArthur has a good point here, although at first glance, I have to confess that I saw more pessimism then loyalty. But I respect the fact that he did speak up with what appears as the highest loyalty, that being a martyr for the cause of Jesus Christ! Thank you for speaking up, JVH0212, about where this could lead, and if there is anyone from whom I would seek correction, it is you my friend. Even in topics such as this where we may view things a little differently, we will always be friends no doubt! I will stress the loyalty of Thomas if this leads in a direction that does not prove to be beneficial to the spiritual well-being of the Forum. Sometimes we get to writing so much here that we forget that we are being watched by the world at large.. And it helps to have a fellow brother in Christ to keep us accountable. Thank you JVH0212!
