2 | Paul our pattern to follow, not Jesus? | Luke 24:46 | kalos | 169579
Bereaniam: Thanks for replying to me and for clarifying your earlier post. Question: "Should we as Gentiles govern our daily Christian walk by the epistles Paul wrote?" An answer: NASB Deuteronomy 8:3 "He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD." NASB Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" Notice that it says "EVERY WORD". Yes, we should live by the epistles written by Paul. We should also live by the epistles written by James, Peter, John and Jude, as well as by the gospels, the Revelation, the Pentateuch, the historical books of the OT, the wisdom books (Psalms, Proverbs, etc.), and the prophets. Why? Because "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16 NASB). Who says the writings of Paul are Scripture? Peter says so. "And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the OTHER SCRIPTURES" (2 Peter 3:15-16 emphasis added). Grace to you, Kalos |

3 | Paul our pattern to follow, not Jesus? | Luke 24:46 | Bereaniam | 169597
Thanks for your notes Kalos...but do you believe that the Gentiles (post resurrection of Jesus) could live a fulfilled Christian life on JUST the epistles that were given to Paul from Jesus? Do you believe they had access to the scriptures as we do today? Do you believe that Jesus failed to give Paul scriptures that would be sufficient for the Gentiles? Are you a Gentile or a Jew, Kalos? Remember Peter and the other disciples separated from Paul and went only to the Jews. Assume we were living at that time...without access to all the bible. Would we express our Christian walk differently? Would you tithe if you only had Paul's epistles? Would we meet from house to house? Would pastors receive a full time salary? Would ministers have titles like bishop, prophet, apostle, Dr., or would those be functions, e.g. Paul, the apostle; Elijah, the prophet; Philip, the evangelist. I don't think so. Bereaniam |

4 | Paul our pattern to follow, not Jesus? | Luke 24:46 | kalos | 169617
For starters, you are asking a hypothetical question, even though you may not have worded it as such: IF the Gentiles had access only to the epistles of Paul, could they have lived a fulfilled Christian life? This question makes a couple of assumptions. The first assumption is that they did NOT have any Hebrew Scriptures. The second one (implied) is that every Gentile church in the Roman empire had access to the complete body of Paul's writings. I see no evidence to prove that either of these assumptions is true. I believe I understand your question(s). What I do not understand is the purpose of these questions. What are you trying to prove? What point are you trying to make? Grace to you, Kalos |

5 | Paul our pattern to follow, not Jesus? | Luke 24:46 | Bereaniam | 169670
If we "rightly divide the Word of truth" the line of division is between the Law and Grace. There are over 20 scriptures that tell us Paul is our pattern to follow, he was given the stewardship (administration) over the dispensation of Grace, just as Moses was the administrator over the dispensation of Law. Today, many Christians comingle Law and Grace. The book of Hebrews tell us to come from under the dispensation of Law, Jesus died to get us out of the outer and inner courts...so we could go into the Holiest place. All scriptures are good for instruction, reproof, etc, but all scriptures are not applicable to us (as Gentiles). This is not rocket science, but I guess I am not expressing my inner feelings very well...but thanks again for all your input. Bereaniam |
