1 | What is to ask and receive the Holy Spir | Luke 11:13 | TEP | 167853
Dear Finder, I have read this thread and am concerned that you might not have gotten a complete answer. (It sounds more like an attempt to quiet and discredit Mitch here than a bible study). So let me try to help. Everyone who repents and has his/her sins remitted shall receive the Holy Spirit. (Act 2:38,39) It is the Holy Spirit that baptises us into the body of Christ. (1Cor 12:13) Note this is baptism into the BODY OF CHRIST not the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the agent that puts us into the body. There is a second experience. The one you ask about. This experience is referred to as baptised into (Act 1:5 Mt. 3:11 etc.)-come upon you (Act 1:8)- receive (John 7:37-39)- filled as in Act 2:4. This may not be a complete list of terms used for the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit but you get the idea. For some this filling occurs with the born again experience as in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10:44-48). Usually though this is a second experience that is given to empower us to be witnesses (Act 1:8). See Acts 8:14-17 these had believed the word that Philip preached of Christ and were baptised in water but did not receive the (filling, baptism, etc.) of the Holy Spirit until hands were laid on them. Having hands laid on is another way to recieve and, as your reference verse supports you can ask for this yourself which is what I advise you to do. Ask the Father and recieve this by faith as we receive all things from Him. Begin to thank Him for it. Worship Him. Praise Him. He will give this to you. He has said He would. And no matter what has been said here on this forum you will not be able to deny your own experience. It may take some seeking on your part but it will happen if you are diligent and sincere in your desire to have more of God. You ask if this happens more than once. You always have a measure of the Holy Spirit in you because you are born again but a believer needs new outpourings of the Spirit to maintain the fullness of God (Acts 4:31, Acts 13:52). You can also refresh yourself and get filled by doing Eph 5:18-21. For the second part of your question I wouldn't say the Spirit is given in different dosages necessarily but there are many manifestations of the Spirit. Remember He is given to empower you to do the work that God has given you to do. God Bless you, TEP |

2 | What is to ask and receive the Holy Spir | Luke 11:13 | BradK | 167856
Dear TEP, One of the challenges on this Forum is to determine what constitutes serious Bible study and what is "pushing a denominatinal bias". Many come here with an agenda to make all see their view. They focus on one or two debatable doctrines and drive them into the ground. Without making an assessment, I think others (myself included) are merely trying to get a solid foundation, define terms, and get some common ground to begin a fruitful discussion. Without that, we get nowhere. Now, with that said, here is what the Bible Knowledge Commentary says about Acts 2:4: "2:4. The filling with the Holy Spirit is separate from the baptism of the Spirit. The Spirit’s baptism occurs once for each believer at the moment of salvation (cf. 11:15-16; Rom. 6:3; 1 Cor. 12:13; Col. 2:12), but the Spirit’s filling may occur not only at salvation but also on a number of occasions after salvation (Acts 4:8, 31; 6:3, 5; 7:55; 9:17; 13:9, 52). An evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit was other tongues (heterais glossais; cf. 11:15-16). These were undoubtedly spoken living languages; the word used in 2:6, 8 is dialekto, which means “language” and not ecstatic utterance. This gives insight into what is meant by “tongues” in chapters 2; 10; 19; and in 1 Corinthians 12-14." I would agree with this view. Different views are acceptable- especially on disputable matters (Rom. 14:1) The challenge is accepting these differences and detaching the heavy emotional baggage that often accompanies them so that there can be fruitful and meaning dialog! Many are simply unwilling to approach these matters with a teachable spirit. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
