Hi, zoe... The narratives of scripture are literal narratives. The poems of scripture are literal poetry. The prophecies of scripture are literal prophecies. The didactic writings of scripture are literal teachings. How else do we read anything? The literal interpretation merely takes the intent of the author into account as the document is interpreted. Greetings Doc! Excellent point my friend! So few people seem to understand what 'taking something literally' actually means. It simply means to take it in the way that it was intended by the author. Hyperbole is hyperbole. Narrative is narrative. Prophesy is prophesy. It seems to me that the reason most do not want to take the Bible 'literally' is so that they can twist the clear words of Scripture so that they mean what they want them to mean. :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Tim, You wrote, "...so they can twist the clear words of Scripture so that they mean what they want them to mean." I think more often than not, they dismiss the clarity of Scripture so that they don't have to think about the meaning at all. I believe it was Mark Twain -- not a Christian at all! -- who wrote, "It isn't the things in the Bible that I don't understand that bother me, its the things in the Bible that I do understand that bother me." It is at that point of "bothering" that we all should take the most careful heed! In Him, Doc |
