1 | I CAME TO FULFILL THE LAW | Matt 5:17 | Reformer Joe | 23246
Jesus did not CHANGE the laws...he more fully explained them to those who thought that merely keeping the law outwardly was fulfillment of the law. That was the whole point of the Pharisees being condemned by Jesus: not because they followed the law but that they followed it only externally; following the law requires wholeheartedly fulfilling it in thought, word, and deed (Deuteronomy 6:5). Jesus did not call them heathens; he called them whitewashed tombs (clean outside, dead and rotten and decaying inside) and hypocrites. Only Jesus has fulfilled the law of God. --Joe! |

2 | I CAME TO FULFILL THE LAW | Matt 5:17 | Hank | 23266
Joe, a major source of confusion and misinterpretation regarding Jesus' condemnation of the Pharisees has been the totally false assumption that Jesus was bent on doing away with the Law. And you correctly state that it had everything to do with the superficiality of the Pharisees and nothing to do with the Law itself. Moreover, the Pharisees in Jesus' time had adulterated the Law significantly by adding to it a host of "commandments" of their own making. --Hank
