Meredith, That is exactly what I see. But, before he became afraid, he trusted Jesus enough to step out on the water. One interesting point is that there is no record of anyone else in scripture that walked on water. Also, he became afraid after he took his eyes off of Jesus and instead, began to look at the waves. Good Morning Pastor Glenn When you pointed out the fact that Peter took his eyes off Jesus I thought of this passage of scripture: My son, attend to my words; incline your ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Put away from you a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from you. Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil. Prov 4:20-27 A heart of unbelief is referred to as evil in Heb 3:12. What I get out of this is: As long as I attend to God's Word and incline my ear to his sayings, faith will come (faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Rom 10:17). I also see that while 'in the boat', it may be easier to trust and stay focused on the Word (Jesus), but once I step in the mist of the ‘boisterous wind’, I REALLY need to be steadfast in attending to, inclining my ear to and looking right on at the Word (Jesus), so that I won’t be ‘O thou of little faith’ but will be more like the woman of Canaan who had great faith: And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Matt 15: 22-28 Meredith |

Meredith, As you mentioned, the faith of the woman of Canaan, was great. And notice that she was an outsider. But she didn't let that stop her from coming to Jesus. Her faith brought healing to her daughter. Here is another example of an outsider with faith: Luke 4 27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian." “…but only the Syrian; for none besides had faith to apply himself to the prophet for a cure. Christ himself often met with greater faith among Gentiles than in Israel. And here he mentions both these instances, to show that he did not dispense the favour of his miracles by private respect, but according to God's wise appointment.” http://www.gospelcom.net/eword/comments/luke/mh/luke4.htm It is bad when outsiders can come to God and trust Him more than those of us that attend every church service, while being fearful and unbelieving about everything that God wants to do in our lives. Good Morning Pastor Glenn Just this morning I was thinking about the Canaanite woman and the fact that she did not have a covenant relationship with God as the Jews had. She was indeed an 'outsider'. Naaman is definitely a good example of an outsider receiving from Jehovah Rapha. I believed that he believed the report of the little maid from Isreal: And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. 2 Kings 5:3 I believe that Naaman and the Canaanite woman, outsiders, were able to receive what they desired because they believed/had faith. The following shows some ‘insiders’ who did not receive from the Lord because of their unbelief: And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. Matt 13:54-58 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. Luke 6:1-6 I agree that it’s sad when an outsider seems to trust our Father more than we do. My prayer is that we, the children of the Most High God: 1. will be as bold as lions Prov 28:1 2. will come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Heb 4:16 3. will not be guilty of having an evil heart of unbelief Heb 3:12 4. will mix the word with faith so that it may profit us Heb 4:2 5. and finally, may we believe so that we can enter into the rest of God Heb 4:3 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you Meredith |
