1 | Unclean food for the Christian? | Lev 1:1 | kalos | 105972 | ||
Law and Gospel: HERE I STAND Let me emphasize: 1) I DO NOT believe 'that Gentiles cannot be saved by faith in Yeshua the Messiah unless they convert to Judaism,' 2) I DO NOT believe in 'requiring saved Gentiles to follow Jewish cultural practices, and/or, '3) legalism, i.e., requiring Gentiles to obey a perverted version of the Torah in which God's Law is seen as a set of rules unrelated to faith.' (David H. Stern, Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel, 1988, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc.) On the other hand, I DO BELIEVE: 'The law cannot be altogether invalid since the New Testament affirms its abiding applicability. '"All Scripture is … useful" (2 Tim 3:16-17), including Old Testament laws. 'Jesus came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Matt 5:17-20). 'The law is the embodiment of truth that instructs (Rom 2:18-19). 'It is "holy" and "spiritual, " making sin known to us by defining it; therefore, Paul delights in it (Rom 7:7-14,22). 'The law is good if used properly (1 Tim 1:8), and is not opposed to the promises of God (Gal 3:21). 'Faith does not make the law void, but the Christian establishes the law (Rom 3:31), fulfilling its requirements by walking according to the Spirit (Rom 8:4) through love (Rom 13:10).' (Baker's Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology. Edited by Walter A. Elwell, 1996 by Walter A. Elwell. Published by Baker Books. (http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/BakersEvangelicalDictionary/)) This is what I believe. I will not be drawn into an argument about what I have posted here. Therefore, I do not intend to justify or debate this post. Sincerely, kalos |

To Kalos. Thank you Kalos for your reply to my question. I also note that you desire not to be drawn into a debate about what you believe and I honour that. You have come closest to answering my question. May i therefore seek further clarification? I too am not seeking to be justified in any way by law or legalism. I suppose the core of my question is - 'Why did God give rules to the Jews about not to eat e.g. pork or shellfish both of which are known to be unclean and contain parasites - but yet to the Christian it seems okay for them to eat? I (forgive the pun) don't want to make a meal of this but I ask 'Are we obeying God or disobeying God about such foods. Apart from been told not to call anything unclean that God has made clean I have not read anywhere where God has clearly and specifically rescinded his law about not eating unclean foods as in Leviticus. I seek only clarification and respect each believers understanding on this subject, I thank you for your patience and insight. |

Asken: You ask: "Why did God give rules to the Jews about not to eat e.g. pork or shellfish both of which are known to be unclean and contain parasites - but yet to the Christian it seems okay for them to eat?" I wonder what percentage of professing Christians has even read every word of the Torah. You write: "I have not read anywhere where God has clearly and specifically rescinded his law about not eating unclean foods as in Leviticus." I agree. I haven't read such a thing either. Peace, kalos |
