Are the Sabbath laws binding on Christians today?

The problem is clarity of the question. Is it for gentile or for jewish beleivers. Is it for both. The answer is found in whether we r talking about a "must do law" or "a faith do grace". Whether u keep shabbot or don't; do so in faith. The same can be said of tithing. Do so as your faith and G-d's grace encourages, allows, "calls for". The resounding message to the jew is; don't throw the baby out with the bath water. The baby being Jesus (Yeshua HaMashiach). Some (not all) jews that were "in power" back then, wrongly judged Him and were blinded for a higher purpose. Remember, the higher purpose was for the jew, and has been bequeathed upon the gentile, until the "alloted time" is completed. The same "saying" applies to the gentile believer, don't throw out the baby with the bath water; baby being, a wonderful blessing, that can be as precious a part of your faith as tithing, or daily devotionals. All these including sabbath (or shabbat), are worthless, unless done in faith and grace to enhance the relationship we have "with Him", "through Him", and "to Him". Him being none other than Yeshua (Jesus),,,, of course. From a Jewish believer to you my friends and precious siblings; Shabbot shalom! |

3 | Must Christians keep the Sabbath today? | Ex 20:8 | Norrie | 14976
Keeping the Sabbath is the only commandment not mentioned again in the NT. Are you a Messianic Jew? Do you mind answering some Jew questions, like what is the difference in Jews? I have a friend that says Jews are only from the tribe of Judah so not all Jews are really Jews. Then there are the Zionists, etc. She says the Zionists are the ones like the movie moguls who are the liberals starting all the contraversy, there are more Zionists than Jews in Israel, etc. What is the real story or do you know? It might be too confusing for anyone to straighten out. :) I mean, if the Jews that are in Israel are really Zionists (which accd to her are troublemakers), then are the Israel prophecies valid today or not as far as Israel being a nation? I get lost on all this. :) |

The Sabbath is mentioned myriads of times in the New Testament. Here are just a few references: Mark 2:27,28; Luke 4:16; Hebrews 4:4,9; Luke 23:54-56; Acts 13:14; Acts 17:2. Notice that Jesus kept the Sabbath, and so did His disciples, even after His resurrection and ascension. In fact, they kept no other day! Note that Gentiles also kept Sabbath (Acts 13:42,44). The point is, the Sabbath is a very common theme in the entire Bible, including the new Testament. Remember, too, that the Sabbath is in the heart of the Ten Commandments, which is an unchangeable, unalterable law (Psalm 111:7,8; 89:34; 119:152; Mal 3:6). Furthermore, Jesus had said: "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). See John 14:15,21,23; 1 John 2:3-6. Love is the basis of the Ten Commandments (see Matthew 22:37-40). Love for God is manifest by obedience to the first four commandments, which forbid idolatory, making and worshiping graven images, blasphemy, and requires the observance of the seventh day Sabbath. Love for one's neighbour is manifest by obedience to the last six precepts. After all, one who loves his neighbour will not steal from him, kill him, etc; will he? The Ten Commandments is an unalterable law. Therefore, all ten precepts (including the Sabbath) stand fast forever, and are binding upon every person who claims the name of Christ (see Matthew 5:17,18). We must walk as He walked. Disregarding any one of the ten precepts is serious offence to God (see Matthew 5:19). While keeping the whole law is required of us (James 2:10), it does not save us. However, obedience is the fruit of love. We don't keep the Ten Commandments to be saved, but because we are saved. According to Revelation 14:12 and 22:14, the saved of all ages are those who have been faifhful to God's commandments. Let me also note that our faith in Jesus does not negate our responsibility to keep the law of God. It is our duty (Ecclesiastes 12:13). "Do we then make void the law through faith? GOD FORBID: yea, we ESTABLISH the law" (Romans 3:31). This is just a brief summary. However, I am more than willing to further discuss this topic with anyone interested. Tuggy, Welcome to the Forum! You state "The Ten Commandments is an unalterable law. Therefore, all ten precepts (including the Sabbath) stand fast forever, and are binding upon every person who claims the name of Christ (see Matthew 5:17,18). We must walk as He walked. Disregarding any one of the ten precepts is serious offence to God (see Matthew 5:19)." I agree, yet what of Paul's treatise in Romans 4 on Justification by Faith? How does that enter in to the mix? As Galatians 3:11-13 says "Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “The righteous man shall live by faith,However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them.”Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”" The whole argument of Galatians 3 is that of beginning in the Spirit, are we now being perfected by the flesh? (3:3) Does not the argument of believers needing to keep the law, find its' answer in Romans 8:3-4?: "For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." You further state "While keeping the whole law is required of us (James 2:10), it does not save us." Do you propose that it is possible for a "believer" to keep the law- even though it is Christ alone who fullfilled it? Romans 10:4 states "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." I'm not clear on your remark that "Let me also note that our faith in Jesus does not negate our responsibility to keep the law of God." Do you and have you kept the law of God? My friend, the law accomplishes 2 things. It shows us how holy God is, and it points to our NEED of a Savior. If I claim to have kept the law, do I not have something in which to boast? ( Rom.4:2, 1 Cor. 1:31) As Christ is the fulfillment of the law, and my righteousness is being found "in Him", is not my mandate now to "walk by faith?" (2 Cor. 5:7) Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |
