I understand your argument. What I think you are failing to keep in mind that it is not merely a matter of someone making up their own mind about the truth. The Holy Spirit convicts the sinner, enlightens the sinner's mind regarding the truth, and persuades the sinner's will to embrace the truth. The Bible is more than just "true information." The Holy Spirit uses the proclamation of His own words as a means of grace to bring the sinner to faith in Christ. If your friend does not want to believe the Bible, it requires a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit to overcome that. That is what the cult evangelist must rely on. Scripture itself is absolutely sufficient to be a tool for evangelism. Don't underestimate God's own words to break down the stubborn self-will of your friend. In addition, if your friend rejects the biblical text itself, to what authority will you appeal for the biblical truth you will be giving him? I have been involved in cult evangelism for over a decade now, and I can attest that the Bible itself, properly used, is the only thing that will be effective in bringing the cultist to Christ. Exposing the errors of a cult is terribly effective at times in getting a person to reject that organization, but they are still as bound for hell if they are not going to embrace the truth. The Bible does not just contain the truth; it IS the TRUTH. Rely on the Holy Spirit and present the Scriptures. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." --Romans 1:16 --Joe! |

Thanks again Joe for your reply. Taking the time with this is appreciated...You have helped me to re-think some things. You Wrote..."Exposing the errors of a cult is terribly effective at times in getting a person to reject that organization, but they are still as bound for hell if they are not going to embrace the truth.".... do you see that you have put my argument? The chicken does come before the egg:-) First, a rejection of the current belief; second, the acceptance of a new belief. But not simultaneously or even back and forth replacing each false part of a system of beliefs with the truth of the Christian belief system. Now on to those pesky cultists,....if I could just find some resources. God Bless....Jensen PS. Rom 1:16? I hope that you do not think that I am in anyway "ashamed of the gospel". |

I don't think you are ashamed of the gospel...it is the "power of God for salvation" part I was bringing up. :) Again, I disagree with your assessment of methodology in dealing with cultists. In fact, I just listened to a tape by John MacArthur which mentioned how a prominent figure within the Watchtower Society (Jehovah's Witnesses) in Florida came to know Christ because of MacArthur's radio broadcast on the deity of Christ. Out of the JW's and right to biblical Christianity, thanks to the unvarnished, undiluted proclamation and expostition of God's Word. The Holy Spirit truly does work in that way, you know. We are not called to first destroy false doctrine, then replace it with true doctrine, but rather to uproot falsehood WITH the truth. "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ" --2 Corinthians 10:3-5 I pray for fruitful ministry to your friend! --Joe! |
