1 | question to smoke pot or not | Gen 1:12 | Jeshuafreak | 54689
You should find the folowing comments enlightening at the least.****** )******Gen 1:11 Then God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them"; and it was so. 2 Gen 1:12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.****** *******"The question to smoke pot or not to is a personal one. One between the Lord and each individual. Regardless of what each person believes in this regard, there is certainly no room for a Christian to judge another Christian on such a thing. Most of us know this, if not all of us. But what should we do if we choose to smoke pot? What I'm talking about is summed up in a situation whereby a friend of mine who had not long become a Christian did regarding the smoking of cigarettes. I was talking to him one day, expressing to him that although as far as Jesus' words on defilement were concerned the people judging him were the ones that are defiled, not him. Because out of them come judgments, which make them in turn stand for judgment. However, as most of us know, Jesus told us my friend was not defiling himself by what he puts into his body. He was so inspired that day, because a brother (me) had taken his side in a small country town, that didn't himslelf (me again) smoke tobacco. He was so inspired that he infact stood at the front steps to the church greeting everyone as he puffed away on his smoke. It's obvious he didn't make any new friends that day. What I'm getting at is that we must be careful to use our freedom as the appostle Paul said "to do good, not evil". The same appostle said in relation to meat sacrificed to idols, that he would eat meat never again if it stumbled a person of weaker faith. I don't think we need never smoke pot again, or cigarettes, to protect those with a weaker faith, but it might be prudent to keep things in their place. Not so much hiding it completely perhaps, but to be careful that we don't insult or upset our brothers or sisters that don't yet understand. Jesus said that the truth would set us free. So it stands to reason, that lies are what keeps us in bondage to beliefs that injure us. If anything, we ought to feel pity for those brothers and sisters that can't believe in a God that loves us beyond what food we eat, or clothes we wear, or what pot we smoke. They have been taught a lie, and have accordingly been trapped from knowing the fullness of the love of God, the finality of the cross, the end of the law for righteousness, to those that believe in Jesus. It's hard to be patient with church goers that petition for tougher drug penalties. I know. My first ever visit to a Christian church ended in a screaming match between the Pastor and I in the foyer of a rather large church. Beause I had gone to hear about God, and he had passed out a pre-typed letter, calling for harsher marijuana penalties. Although he was wrong in what he did, I too was wrong in my approach. Of Jesus they said in prophecy of his coming "a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smouldering flax he won't extinguish". And so we should be also, we should go careful and tread lightly on this subject, sympathetically understanding their ignorance is injuring them, far more than us. rob" ---rob ****Jeshuafreak writes--------- I find this man's comments enlightening.. Thought provoking.. and maybe a little inspiring.. This is an issue I am currently dealing with in my communty as well. Praises be to God the Creator of all things in heaven and on earth. He who will cause the simple things of this world to confound the wise..and He who makes the simple minded to be wise. 2 | question to smoke pot or not | Gen 1:12 | BradK | 54722
Dear Jeshuafreak, I trust that I understand the question being asked. Certainly, what someone purposes to do in the privacy of their own home is between them and the Lord. However, in my estimation it's a smoke-screen to justify un-godly conduct (pun intended). Galatians 6 speaks to our focus and the results of our reaping. I speak from extensive personal knowledge and experience. Prior to my coming to the Lord in 1985, I had been a heavy user of marijuana and other substances. Let me offer 3 brief points in comment: 1. This appears to be a Libertarian issue. I'm very familiar with their position on a number of issues and endorse most of their Political/Economical views. However, I would take strong exception to their stance on most social issues, such as this because I feel they take personal freedom beyond Biblical injunctions; 2. Marijuana and other such controlled substances are ILLEGAL! Do we advocate that a "Christian" knowingly and willingly break the law? I think not. Christ spoke to this matter in general in Matt. 22:21. How do we reconcile breaking the law with Pauls' admonition in Titus 2;6-7, "to be sober minded?" (See also Tit. 3:3,..."serving various lusts and pleasures..."); 3. I had a brother in the Lord ask me this past year,'what legalizing marijuana had to do with being a Christian?' I challenged him to provide me with any scriptural support or basis to his arguement. He never answered back. My question would be this: Where do we find Biblical admonition to smoke pot? We can't appeal to this based upon the silence of scripture. However, here's what we do know. Paul in 1 Cor.6 and 10 says, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are not helpful (profitable)... I don't know how being "stoned" would be profitable or for that matter edifying! Further, in Gal.5:13 we have the practice of liberty with parameters,..."do not use liberty as an opportunity for THE FLESH, but through love serve one another." If marijuana is not a desire of the flesh I don't know what is. Lastly, how would Pauls' imperative in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 be viewed? How would my getting high "glorify God in my body?" I hope this perspective is of help. Speaking the Truth In Love, BradK |

3 | question to smoke pot or not | Gen 1:12 | Hank | 54723
Brad, just moments ago, before reading your post in which you pointed out that pot is, among other things, an illicit and controlled substance, I listened to a radio news cast on which was the story about a regional athlete who was stopped by police for speeding and subsequently was found to be high on pot and was arrested. The thought crossed my mind: what would it do to my witness for Christ if I were arrested for speeding and being high on pot, and in the news cast it was said that this man is a member of First Baptist Church? And what if, after spending a few days in the slammer, I visited a friend to talk to him about Jesus. My friend says, "Hank, I thought you were going to call on me last week." And I confess, "Well, I'd meant to you see, but I was arrested for speeding and being high on pot, and just this morning got out of jail. Sorry for the delay. I hope you understand. Now, let's talk about Jesus..." How great an impact am I likely to make? Has my witness been clouded by the smoke of pot? --Hank
4 | question to smoke pot or not | Gen 1:12 | 2ndSamuel22 | 54728
Dear Hank, I believe Paul summed this up in Galatians 5:20--"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, WITCHCRAFT, hatred,..." The word "witchcraft" comes from the Greek, "pharmakeia", and according to Vine's-- "(Eng., "pharmacy," etc.) primarily signified "the use of medicine, drugs, spells;" then, "poisoning;" then, "sorcery," Gal 5:20, RV, "sorcery" (AV, "witchcraft"), mentioned as one of "the works of the flesh." See also Rev 9:21; 18:23. In the Sept., Exd 7:11,22; 8:7,18; Isa 47:9,12. In "sorcery," the use of drugs, whether simple or potent, was generally accompanied by incantations and appeals to occult powers, with the provision of various charms, amulets, etc., professedly designed to keep the applicant or patient from the attention and power of demons, but actually to impress the applicant with the mysterious resources and powers of the sorcerer." 5 | question to smoke pot or not | Gen 1:12 | BradK | 54731
Dear Hank and 2 Samuel 22, Your observations are noted and applauded. I have to add a couple final notes to this topic. 1. christiansforcannabis.com is a sad but sorry attempt to justify their behavior from a scriptural standpoint. But, where do we stop? How about: Christians for Heroin, Christians for Acid, or Christians for Mescaline, etc. Where does it end?; 2. Can anyone seriously picture our Lord, Jesus Christ, in His Holiness engaging in illicit drug use? If He wouldn't, why should we? Lets'get real! Speaking the Truth In Love, BradK |
