Searcher I don't mean to butt in, I hope this wasn’t a trick question, but James 2;19 is the scripture. I like John MacArthur's explanation; "A clear reference to the passage most familiar to his Jewish readers: the Shema (Deut. 6:4,5), the most basic doctrine of the OT. demons believe. Even fallen angels affirm the oneness of God and tremble at its implications. Demons are essentially orthodox in their doctrine (cf. Matt. 8:29,30; Mark 5:7; Luke 4:41; Acts 19:15). But orthodox doctrine by itself is no proof of saving faith. They know the truth about God, Christ, and the Spirit, but hate it and them. MacArthur, J. J. (1997, c1997). EdB ... James 2:19 says that that believe that God is one, not in Jesus Christ. The Bible is Right ... where does the Bible say this? |

Searcher To Believe in the TRUE God you also have to believe in Jesus since they are one. Jesus was with God since the beginning. Nothing was created without Him. The demons obviously believe in Jesus they had seen Him they knew who He was when walked upon this earth. In fact He told them to shut up as the revealed who He was. They were in subjection to Him when He told them to leave or go into the pigs. Demons know Jesus and therefore they believe He is who He claimed to be. However they do not depend on Him for their salvation. Therefore salvation must demand more than just belief in Jesus Christ. The word says we are saved through grace and if we go to Titus 2:11-15 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12TEACHING US THAT, DENYING UNGODLINESS AND WORLDLY LUSTS, WE SHOULD LIVE SOBERLY, RIGHTEOUSLY, AND GODLY IN THE PRESENT AGE, 13LOOKING FOR THE BLESSED HOPE AND GLORIOUS APPEARING OF OUR GREAT GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, 14who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. 15Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. We see what saving grace produces in the life of a believer. I think it is safe to say if a person does not have evidence of these things in his life that person does not have saving grace in his life. EdB |

EdB, my good and respected friend: The following is an example of a false syllogism. The Chinese drank only small quantities of milk. The Chinese had a low incidence of cancer. Therefore, milk caused cancer. False syllogism. You see how one can add 2 and 1 and come up with 4? If I understand you correctly, in your previous post you are saying: Demons believe that Jesus exists. Demons are not saved. Therefore, grace alone through faith alone does not save. I have huge problems with the latter syllogism. You write: "Demons know Jesus and therefore they believe He is who He claimed to be." Believing in Jesus' existence is not the same as exercising genuine saving faith, which is to "adhere to, trust in, rely on, cling to" or give themselves up to Him, take themselves out of their own keeping and entrust themselves into His keeping. This the demons did not do. It seems we are comparing apples and onions. If there is something we can or must do, something we must add to our faith, to gain salvation, what would that be? Over a period of time we have ruled out surrender to the lordship of Christ (this is not a condition for salvation); baptism (this has been discussed here ad nauseum); and repentance (a false addition to faith when understood as a prerequisite, requiring the cleansing of the life FIRST in order to be saved. (See page 1950, MacArthur Study Bible.) We have said hundreds of times: Good works are the result, not the cause of salvation. Remaining faithful is the result, not the cause of genuine saving faith. So what must we DO to be saved? Keep the commandments? Obey the law? AMPLIFIED Acts 13:39 And that through Him everyone who believes [who acknowledges Jesus as his Savior and devotes himself to Him] is absolved (cleared and freed) from every charge from which he could not be justified and freed by the Law of Moses and given right standing with God. AMPLIFIED Romans 3:20 For no person will be justified (made righteous, acquitted, and judged acceptable) in His sight by observing the works prescribed by the Law. For [the real function of] the Law is to make men recognize and be conscious of sin [not mere perception, but an acquaintance with sin which works toward repentance, faith, and holy character]. AMPLIFIED Romans 3:28 For we hold that a man is justified and made upright by faith independent of and distinctly apart from good deeds (works of the Law). [The observance of the Law has nothing to do with justification.] AMPLIFIED Galatians 2:16 Yet we know that a man is justified or reckoned righteous and in right standing with God not by works of the Law, but [only] through faith and [absolute] reliance on and adherence to and trust in Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). [Therefore] even we [ourselves] have believed on Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law [for we cannot be justified by any observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses], because by keeping legal rituals and by works no human being can ever be justified (declared righteous and put in right standing with God). [Ps. 143:2.] AMPLIFIED Galatians 3:11 Now it is evident that no person is justified (declared righteous and brought into right standing with God) through the Law, for the Scripture says, The man in right standing with God [the just, the righteous] shall live by and out of faith and he who through and by faith is declared righteous and in right standing with God shall live. [Hab. 2:4.] So whatever it is that we must do to be saved, keep our salvation or add to our salvation, it is not surrender, baptism, repentance, keeping the law, good works or holding on and holding out. If one finally is saved and makes it into the kingdom of God it will be because God held on to that person, not the other way around. GOD DOES THE SAVING. GOD DOES THE KEEPING. SALVATION IS OF THE LORD. Again, Ed, I respect you and your high view of the Scriptures. I am not writing this to antagonize you. Grace and peace by multiplied unto you, kalos |
