1 | Lifting up of hands? | Ps 63:4 | Makarios | 13926
What is the significance of "lifting up of hands" in worship? Lifting up of one's hands in worship can be found in Psalm 28:2; 63:4; 119:48; 134:2; Lamentations 2:19; 3:41; and Hebrews 12:12.. Does the "lifting up of hands" have a special meaning?
2 | Lifting up of hands? | Ps 63:4 | Searcher56 | 13929
Nicodemus, Lifting up of hands done is never in the context of worship. I heard that some lift their hands as a sign of surrender, praise or victory. But, is this being humble before the Lord, in worship? I don't think so. The verses you cite, have nothing to do with worhip, even in the context: Psalm 28:2 is during a cry for mercy (prayer ?) Psalm 63:4 is during a time of praise Psalm 119:48 is surrender to His commands Psalm 134:2 is during a time of praise Lamentations 2:19 is during a cry for one's children (prayer ?) Lamentations 3:41 is during a time of confession of sin Hebrews 12:12 is about strengthening arms and knees Study the context of these passages to see if their is worship. Of course you can change the meaning of worship as defined by God, as others have. Steve |

3 | Lifting up of hands? | Ps 63:4 | Makarios | 13947
On the contrary, Steve, these verses have EVERYTHING to do with worship! :) I suggest that it is you who need to go back and study the context of these verses. Your explanation alone proves you wrong. :) You stated: "Psalm 28:2 is during a cry for mercy (prayer ?) Psalm 63:4 is during a time of praise Psalm 119:48 is surrender to His commands Psalm 134:2 is during a time of praise Lamentations 2:19 is during a cry for one's children (prayer ?) Lamentations 3:41 is during a time of confession of sin Hebrews 12:12 is about strengthening arms and knees" Now by looking at your commentary, how can these verses not be tied into worship?? I am not in any way changing the meaning of the word "worship" by ascribing worship to these verses. It is difficult to find anyplace in the Bible that doesn't have something to do with worship. So I return to my original unanswered question: What is the significance of "lifting up of hands" in worship? Thank you in advance for your answer! Nicodemus |

4 | Lifting up of hands? | Ps 63:4 | Searcher56 | 13955
Nolan - I already said that some say it is a sign of surrender or praise, victory. They say it is part of worship because of that. I say again, "lifting up of hands" had nothing to do with worship. It is something that is being taught that is part of worship or worship itself. You need to point out where there is worship in these verses. Are you saying all we do is worship? If not what is your definition of worship? Again, I will use the word gentleman. Very few men are gentleman, by what the orginal meaning. But, now we call all men, gentleman ... because someone thought it was a good idea. Words have chnaged becuase of culture. Soon we will redefine certain sins to make it okay, as well as God, salvation ... Are we to let the world dicate to us what we believe, os we conform to their ways, or are we tho be transformers? 5 | Are praise and worship different? | Ps 63:4 | Sir Pent | 13965
Dear Steve and Nolan, Lifting up of hands is not a way that I personally choose to worship God. However, I have known many people whom I respect who do choose to worship that way, and it seems to bring them into closer communion with God. I am curious about your definition of worship Steve. If I understand your post, you agree that lifting of hands can be related to praising God (Psalm 134 below). However you say that this is not worship. I always thought that praising God was one form of worship. Could you please explain the differences that you see between them. Psalm 134 1: Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD! 2: Lift up your hands to the holy place, and bless the LORD! 3: May the LORD bless you from Zion, he who made heaven and earth! |

6 | Are praise and worship different? | Ps 63:4 | Makarios | 14000
Greetings, I appreciate your input! Yes, I also know many people who practice the 'raising up' of their hands during worship, and by no means do I condemn this form of worshipping our Lord, even though I myself do not practice it. Forum member, you are very new to this Forum and I welcome you! However, I will not repeat your Screen Name in any of my posts, since I took your name at first glance to mean "a snake". I do not believe that I would be bringing any glory whatsoever to God in any way by repeating your screen name, Forum member. Perhaps if you would reveal your name or change your Screen Name to something that I could repeat, then I would be a little more comfortable addressing you. As for myself, I have most recently changed my Screen Name for the very reason that this Forum has become and is becoming so much more "public" than ever!! I have become a little 'wary' of using my real name on such a public forum as this. Therefore, I sought to be creative in changing my Forum Name (but not my Forum identity). :) However, "Nicodemus" may not be what I entirely decide upon, since my mind has not been totally "made up". :) For my first 1,715 postings my Screen Name was Nolan Keck. For the past 8, it has been Nicodemus. If anyone has any "suggestions" on what I should call myself, than please send me a note at nkeck98@yahoo.com! As for you, Forum member, I would suggest that you would find a Screen Name that would make us all a little more comfortable in referring to you, since fellowship is the emphasis here at this Forum (and fellowship about the Bible), and not anyone's Screen Name. Thank you! Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |

7 | Are praise and worship different? | Ps 63:4 | Joren | 14006
From Sir Pent's forum profile: You may be wondering about the meaning of my screen name. In one perspective, I try to be chivalrous in my dealings. There is also a second meaning, which combines the two words. I would refer you to Matthew 10:16. From Matthew 10:16 (KJV): "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." -- Joren |

Yes, I have read that Joren. But that does not affect they way that I feel about repeating his Screen Name. --Nicodemus |

9 | Are praise and worship different? | Ps 63:4 | Sir Pent | 14270
Nicodemus, I regret that you too are so offended by my chosen screen name. I have a three perspectives on this issue. 1. I believe that you are wrong to be so apperantly judgemental towards another person just because of a screen name. Especially when the name has been clearly defined in a biblical perspective in both the user profile, as well as by other forum members (thanks for your defense Joren). I would also submit that when God created the serpent or snake (as part of the overall creation), He said it was "good". And in the verse that I reference in my profile, Jesus encourages believers to emulate the positive attribute of wisdom modeled after the serpent. Besides this, my user name is not even Serpent, as such, emphasizing that side of things. But instead is Sir Pent, emphasizing the ideas of chivalry and knighthood. The combined word is only a secondary meaning. 2. My second perspective is this. You are a fellow believer in Christ. I know this from your postings, and from other knowledge which will at this time remain unspoken. Therefore, as a Christian, you must allow the Holy Spirit to guide your life. If just writing my user name in a post is somthing which the Spirit convicts you as being sinful, then I support your decision to refrain from doing that. 3. My final perspective is this. There is a biblical precedent for "judging a tree by its fruit". I would encourage you and all other members of this forum to read several of my responses to others questions. I believe this should give a much more accurate perspective on where I'm comming from than just deciding based on my screen name. |

10 | Are praise and worship different? | Ps 63:4 | Sandman | 14597
Nice reply SirPent, scripturally based and rooted in love. "We know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know." 1 Cor. 8:1-2 "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Eph 4:2 Sandman |
