1 | Jesus descend into hell | 1 Peter | BMyers | 201552
I believe this doctrine/belief is partly based on the following verses: 1PE 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 1PE 3:19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 1PE 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. The actual statement comes from the Apostles' Creed. If you study Roman Catholic Church, you will find that part of the creed teaches this, "He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead." I'm not a Bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination and maybe someone else can enlighten us more, but I think this belief/doctrine is based more on the creed than the Bible. Brad |

2 | Jesus descend into hell | 1 Peter | Hank | 201573
Hi, Brad :: There can be little doubt that the influence of the Apostles' Creed is at least partially responsible for the widespread and unquestioned acceptance of the teaching that Jesus went to hell between His death and resurrection. Even the clause itself, "He descended into hell" comes straight from the Creed. Some false teachers assert that Jesus suffered in hell after His death on the Cross because His death on the Cross was insufficient for atonement. This is a completely false doctrine that finds no support whatever in Scripture. There is what for me was a helpful article on this subject at the following URL. I've cited it already on this thread, but it would do no harm to list it again, so here it is: http://www.gotquestions.org/did-Jesus-go-to-hell.html ..... This article takes pains to point out that much of the confusion lies in how the Hebrew and Greek words for Sheol and Hades respectively are translated into English in a number of versions. Anyway, I found the article helpful and hope you will too. It's good to have you on SBF, Brad. --Hank
3 | Jesus descend into hell | 1 Peter | Morant61 | 201581
Greetings Hank! Excellent article! At our local congregation, I did a study awhile back concerning some popular misconceptions about Hell and Satan. Most of these misconceptions are based upon a misunderstanding of the different words used for Hell in Scripture and a mixing in of our pop cultural ideas. What I demonstrated to our class is that (contrary to pop opinion): 1) Hell is currently empty! People will not be sent to Hell until after the great white throne judgment in Rev. 20:11-15. 2) Satan is not the ruler of Hell (Rev. 20:10). Hell is where he will be sent to be punished. He has no power to make deals for souls. He has no authority in Hell whatsoever. 3) Satan is not currently in Hell. Scripture tells us that he is roaming to and fro seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). 4) Finally, Jesus did not go to 'Hell'; rather, He went to the grave. For those who are really gluttons for punishment, go to post 66034 for a discussion about the different words translated as 'Hell' in Scripture. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
