Subject: Jesus descend into hell |
Bible Note: Greetings Hank! Excellent article! At our local congregation, I did a study awhile back concerning some popular misconceptions about Hell and Satan. Most of these misconceptions are based upon a misunderstanding of the different words used for Hell in Scripture and a mixing in of our pop cultural ideas. What I demonstrated to our class is that (contrary to pop opinion): 1) Hell is currently empty! People will not be sent to Hell until after the great white throne judgment in Rev. 20:11-15. 2) Satan is not the ruler of Hell (Rev. 20:10). Hell is where he will be sent to be punished. He has no power to make deals for souls. He has no authority in Hell whatsoever. 3) Satan is not currently in Hell. Scripture tells us that he is roaming to and fro seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). 4) Finally, Jesus did not go to 'Hell'; rather, He went to the grave. For those who are really gluttons for punishment, go to post 66034 for a discussion about the different words translated as 'Hell' in Scripture. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
