Subject: Jesus descend into hell |
Bible Note: I wish I could enlighten, but as I have stated more than once I'm no Bible scholar. I was hoping someone that is Catholic may have some insight into the Creed (or Lutheran, even church of England). The United Methodist changed the creed some and reads: "was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead;". If you do a search on the Catholic Encyclopedia online, it has an interesting article about the creed and the history behind it. I know very little about the Creed since I’ve attended an Assembly of God church my whole life and the Creed is not something we recite. I don’t know what the Chinese version of the Creed might be? Reading the online article and doing a little research apparently the Creed went through some changes at different Councils. As the debates were going on in the Councils, the Creed was adjusted to make sure it expressed the belief of the Council. At this point you have just about depleted my knowledge on the Creed. As far as the orginal question did Jesus go to hell/hades? AC 2:31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY. As you can tell by my typing, I'm not an English major either, so I read the above verse and can take it either way (He did (but hell couldn't hold Him)or He didn't go to hell (because hell didn't have power over Him)). Is there important Biblical issue I'm missing if Jesus did or did not go to hell? Thanks, Brad |
