Bible Question: After Jesus was crucified dead and buried, did He descend into hell? I was reading lyrics from a Rich Mullins song and he mentioned this. |
Bible Answer: I believe this doctrine/belief is partly based on the following verses: 1PE 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 1PE 3:19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 1PE 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. The actual statement comes from the Apostles' Creed. If you study Roman Catholic Church, you will find that part of the creed teaches this, "He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead." I'm not a Bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination and maybe someone else can enlighten us more, but I think this belief/doctrine is based more on the creed than the Bible. Brad |
